Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Prospect Management & Research, the Prospect Research Analyst serves as a partner to Development staff across the university. This includes partnering with development officers to optimize fundraising portfolios and actively manage and forecast the university’s pipeline of gifts. The position will build, evaluate, maintain, and rate a qualified pool of prospects using wealth screening data and other available tools. The position serves as a campus contact and resource for information regarding major donors and prospects. and applies independent judgment, makes decisions, and interpret policies and procedures necessary for the identification, evaluation and tracking of major gift prospects and donors.

Department Summary

The role of the University Development & Alumni Engagement Division (UDAE) is to foster strong relationships with internal and external partners to enhance support for Cal Poly. UDAE establishes and implements an overall advancement program, including coordinating fundraising, donor relations, gift processing, trust and endowment management, training and systems support for the donor database, and Cal Poly Foundation support and administration.

Key Qualifications

Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.

Ability to interpret, apply and communicate on a wide variety of policies and procedures relating to and impacting prospect research and fundraising.

Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

Working knowledge and experience in prospect research, development, fundraising, market research, and/or relevant experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of biographical and financial reference sources and ability to gather information effectively from a variety of resources with the ability to analyze data and make accurate projections.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and one year of technical or administrative experience.

A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


Anticipated Hiring Range: $45,600 - $65,000 per year

Classification Range: $39,456 - $76,164 per year
