THE POSITION SUMMARY

The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) provides leadership and expertise for helping the university achieve its diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Guided by social justice principles, we cultivate a vibrant learning and working community for all members. The following units are within ODI: ADA Compliance, Bias Incident Support Services, Diversity Training & Education, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Nyumburu Cultural Center, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct, Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE), and TerrapinSTRONG. 

The LGBTQ+ Equity Center engages and encourages the campus in building a fully equitable community, and provides programming that develops and empowers agents of social justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people.

The director provides expertise and leadership for UMD on building, maintaining, and promoting an inclusive campus environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied people. The director also provides overall administrative, operational, programming, and fiscal direction for the LGBTQ+ Equity Center. This position spearheads strategic planning, budget management, fund development, and assessment for all Center’s programs and services. The director oversees the supervision, development, and evaluation of all Center staff; identifies and addresses barriers to student success; serves on various university and community committees; and works with key stakeholders to foster a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment for all students, with a particular focus on students from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities. The director will have a demonstrated passion for and mastery of outreach, education, student development, collaboration, and advocacy. The director will serve as a liaison between the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the university’s community, and community partners.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree required. Ten years of experience working with LGBTQ+ populations preferably within higher education. Five years of supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive experience with advising, student development, program development and assessment, public speaking, collaboration with campus and community partners, policy and practice advocacy, and consultation with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Demonstrated experience navigating complex campus structures and contexts in support of effecting institutional change for LGBTQ+ communities.
  • Strong understanding of how sexual orientation and gender identity and expression intersect with other social identities and experiences.
  • Knowledge and experience developing marketing, promotional, and public relations materials for university diversity initiatives.
  • Knowledge of relevant research and assessment standards in higher education.
  • Knowledge of budget and fiscal management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret policies and laws and make recommendations to key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and assess short- and long-term strategic plans.
  • Ability to use good judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, tact, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and concise verbal and written reports.

PREFERENCES:

  • Ph.D. preferred.
  • Passion for supporting marginalized and historically underrepresented student populations and community members.
  • Participates in professional organizations that address issues of diversity and inclusion. 
  • Knowledge of culturally competent practices and inclusive support services for students from various underrepresented and marginalized communities, especially those representing various gender identities and expression.
  • Advance user of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access).
  • Intermediate to Advance user of GSuite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Time and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and work with deadlines.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.
