Position: The University of Mississippi invites applications for the full­time, 12-month administrative faculty position as Chair of the Department of Art & Art History in the College of Liberal Arts. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities: The Chair will assume administrative responsibility for directing the department’s faculty/staff hiring, annual reviews, budgeting, course planning, curriculum, and other academic duties, be committed to the professional development of faculty, staff, and students, and foster collaborations within the Department and with other appropriate campus constituencies.

Qualifications: Candidates for the position must have earned a doctoral or other terminal degree, or equivalent, and have a track record and experience commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must have a strong record of successful teaching, research and creative activity, service, administration, a commitment to the recruitment and mentorship of diverse faculty, staff, and students, dedication to graduate and undergraduate training, knowledge of broad curricular and academic issues in the field, and demonstrate interpersonal and leadership skills.

The Department of Art & Art History is committed to developing a foundation for understanding art history and studio art methodologies through focus on hands-on, practical, and theoretical approaches. The department promotes a broad, thorough education in the arts in a Liberal Arts context, that through undergraduate and graduate programs yield highly qualified life-long learners with effective creative problem solving, critical thinking, visual and verbal and written communication skills. It also serves the educational needs of studio art and art history majors and a diverse clientele, while recognizing the value of the individual. The Department enrolls 110 students with 16 full-time faculty and 9 adjunct faculty and offers a BA and BFA in Studio Art, BA in Art History and MFA in Studio Art.

Minimum qualifications:                                                

  • Experience commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor in the Department of Art & Art History at the time of appointment.
  • Doctoral or other terminal degree or equivalent in a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership experience.
  • Record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
