The Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in the area of User Experience Design (UXD). The expected start date is July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have a PhD in Information, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Engineering, or a terminal degree in a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek applicants with expertise in one of the following areas: information visualization, accessibility and inclusive design, community-based design approaches, usability and evaluation assessment, sustainable design, UX leadership, and service design. Applicants should demonstrate intellectual curiosity and drive to pursue innovative pedagogical methods and interests in establishing a long-term career as a teaching stream faculty member. The successful candidate’s teaching interests will complement and build upon our existing strengths (https://ischool.utoronto.ca/). Industrial experience in a related area is considered to be a strong asset.

Faculty are expected to combine their expertise in the discipline with best practices in teaching to create rich learning environments that embrace diversity, promote equity, and integrate cutting-edge teaching approaches in a manner that challenges students to develop skills and ethics to be leading citizens. The successful candidate will also be expected to perform standard professional and administrative activities typical of an academic unit, and to collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development.

Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent and innovative pedagogical practices and an engagement in teaching-related scholarly activities. Publications in pedagogical approaches related to design would be an asset.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through a mix of teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, workshops, panels and events organized, peer reviewed pedagogy-focused publications, other pedagogical or tutorial materials and activities (e.g., multimedia assets), evidence of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), strong letters of reference from referees of high standing, as well as the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. The dossier must include a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations.
