Duties and Responsibilities:Loyola University Chicago’s (LUC) School of Environmental Sustainability (SES) invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track teaching faculty position in Sustainability Science, beginning in August 2022.
The SES seeks to diversify its faculty and is particularly encouraging underrepresented minorities, women, and people with disabilities to apply. The successful candidate will start at the rank of Lecturer beginning in August 2022, and the position will be reviewed every three years for renewal and promotion. We seek an instructor to teach Environmental Sustainability (ENVS283) and Ecological Economics (ENVS335). The instructor is expected to contribute to the Environmental Economics & Sustainability curricula and the SES’s Environment & Society Affinity Group. Preferred applicants will be motivated to advance the SES mission.
Loyola University Chicago is committed to environmental sustainability and social justice, having transformed its campuses to meet energy, water, and waste efficiencies that have consistently ranked the University in the top 5% of green campuses nationally. The new School of Environmental Sustainability is growing quickly and currently serves 380 undergraduate and 70 graduate students. It is housed within a state-of-the-art geothermally heated/cooled building complex containing a 3,100 sq ft greenhouse, aquaponics facilities, a biodiesel production facility, teaching & research labs, environmental analytical lab, ecotoxicology lab, a GIS Lab, and a ‘green’ dormitory. The university prioritizes sustainability with 13 high-performing LEED certified buildings, permeable pavement, green roof installations, and student-run urban gardens supplying the LUC Farmer’s Market. The Loyola University Retreat & Ecology Campus (LUREC) has a wetland restoration project in a 20-acre wetland, a 5-acre organic farm, and is a venue for teaching and research in sustainable agriculture, ecology, and wetland restoration. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate their potential for excellence in teaching and devotion to student success. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in economics, agricultural economics, applied economics, ecological economics, resource economics, sustainability science, ecology, public policy, or a closely related field. Underrepresented minorities, women, and people with disabilities with experience teaching undergraduate courses as the instructor of record will be given strongest consideration. The successful candidate will teach Environmental Sustainability (ENVS283) and Ecological Economics (ENVS335). These courses explore the economic and social aspects of sustainability and require a candidate with a strong background in natural sciences and economics. The candidate will teach Environmental Sustainability as an engaged learning course that provides students experiences outside the classroom through service-learning, field work or research. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop courses in their specialty that enhance the SES curriculum. Candidates should have a Ph.D., but ABD will be considered.
