Position Summary:

The College of Public Health at the University of Georgia, pursuant to its mission and values, invites applications for a new scientist-practitioner position specializing in cognitive aging to begin August 1, 2022. This tenure track or tenured on appointment position is an academic 9-month appointment. The successful candidate will have credentials at the Associate Professor level and will maintain a primary appointment in the Institute of Gerontology, a research institute consisting of more than 25 affiliated faculty from across the University of Georgia. The candidate will contribute to the Institute’s Cognitive Aging Research and Education (CARE) Center, an interdisciplinary, interprofessional research, mentorship, and outreach space that trains students and postdoctoral fellows from a variety of disciplines to become part of the future cognitive aging workforce. The successful candidate’s rank, tenure status, and promotion unit will be determined at the time of hire based on the application and promotion and tenure guidelines. The hiring is part of a campus-wide Presidential Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring that aims to recruit 50 faculty members who will educate students and advance research in these areas. Rather than being housed exclusively in a single department, however, the majority of UGA’s newly recruited faculty will focus on the fusion of cross-cutting areas such as infectious diseases, integrative precision agriculture, ethics, cybersecurity, resilient communities and the environment. The College of Public Health will utilize this initiative to demonstrate our commitment to diversifying our faculty and ensure that we maintain and grow the culture of equity and inclusivity in our college. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of the university and college, and this hiring initiative will make use of the best practices to ensure an inclusive search process. The Diversity and Inclusion Plan for the college identifies priority areas for our investments and through the 2021-2022 academic year we will develop a Diversity Strategic Plan as part of a campus-wide effort. The college offers structured mentoring programs for all faculty that support professional development. The focus of this hiring initiative will be in the field of Precision One Health, and will be part of a cluster spanning the College of Pharmacy, College of Veterinary Medicine, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, College of Public Health, and the College of Engineering. Areas of research might include, but are not limited to: medicinal chemistry, chemistry, chemical biology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, animal models of antimicrobial resistance, novel drug discovery, origins of antimicrobial resistance, and therapeutics for emerging infectious diseases.

Additional Requirements:

Requirements for the rank of Associate Professor are outlined in the University’s Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Guidelines and the College of Public Health’s Promotion and Tenure Guidelines. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must have been tenured at a prior institution and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • An accredited neuropsychology focused internship
  • Completed an accredited postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology, health psychology or gero-psychology
  • Eligible for licensure in Georgia

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

We seek applicants with an established record of successful clinical and research training and national recognition in multidisciplinary clinical research as evinced by substantive external research funding and peer reviewed publications. We are especially interested in candidates who will advance our multidisciplinary research, integrated clinical training, and contribute innovative perspectives to workforce development that are central to the Precision One Health initiative and the CARE Center. The ideal candidate will have a background and other evidence that suggest they will successfully collaborate closely with Institute, Department, College and Cluster faculty and contribute to large initiatives to fund clinical research and training. Specific research areas that contribute to this mission include (but are not limited to) cognitive neuroscience of aging, geriatric clinical neuropsychology, and neuroscience of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
