Position Summary:

Governors State University (GSU) invites nominations and applications for four tenure track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant / Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services. We seek candidates with interest and experience in teaching generalist and advanced social work practice courses. The successful applicant will have micro, mezzo or macro teaching experience in an Integrated Social Work Practice curriculum. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching social work practice grounded in a social justice ethic.

We seek an individual who has:

  1. A demonstrated record of excellent teaching
  2. Substantial practice and teaching experience in an Integrated Social Work Practice curriculum.
  3. A commitment to social justice and anti-racist social work practice
  4. A commitment to excellence in mentoring students, particularly students of color and first-generation college students
  5. An established research agenda and record of scholarship
  6. An established record of university and community service or service to the profession

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is a dynamic learning community serving those who seek to make a substantive difference in the public sector. Degrees offered in the College of Health and Human Services include the Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work, Nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Communication Disorders, Health Administration, and Addictions and Behavior Health and Community Health.

Our Social Work Programs emphasize critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for leading and managing effectively in a diverse society. Our graduates are prepared for anti-racist practice grounded in a social justice ethic, to develop, innovate and navigate successfully in the complex world in which we live.

A complete application will include: a cover letter, a resume/vita, transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, a research statement, and a list of three references. Additionally, an applicant invited to an on-campus/virtual interview may be asked to provide evaluative materials that will assist us in assessing your teaching experiences and a description of your teaching philosophy.

Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MSW from a CSWE-accredited institution
  • Doctorate in Social Work or a related field; ABD’s will be considered, but must complete all degree requirements by July 1, 2023
  • Two-five years of post-MSW teaching experience
  • Two years post-MSW social work practice experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of post-MSW teaching experience is preferred.
  • Five years of post-MSW social work practice experience is preferred
  • Preference will be given to applicants whose backgrounds, experience, research interests, and expertise have prepared them to contribute to the social justice mission of the Social Work Department.
  • For consideration at the rank of Assistant Professor, the preferred applicant will have begun to establish a publication record and demonstrate the potential to continue to contribute to the scholarly research base of the field and secure external funding to support their research agenda. For consideration of a higher rank, the applicant must have a well-established record of publications and scholarship and a demonstrated ability to secure external research funding.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.
