About the College/Unit/Department:

The Department of Entertainment and Media Studies (EMST) together with the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, and the Department of Journalism constitutes the units of the Grady College. EMST is home to media scholars of varied theoretical and methodological traditions. It administers the major in Entertainment & Media Studies, which teaches students visual storytelling focused on entertainment. MFA in film or television production.

Position Summary:

The Department of Entertainment and Media Studies seeks to hire a colleague for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position that is eligible for reappointment. The person will be expected to teach courses in television and/or film production and carry a 2/2 teaching load. The candidate will also demonstrate great potential to produce original creative work. Service on department, college and university committees is expected.

Additional Requirements:

Candidates with an MA degree in a related field and at least three years of significant professional experience and accomplishments in film and/or television production, screenwriting, and producing for film and/or television will be considered. Such candidates must be approved for a terminal-degree exception before hire.

Exceptions to the terminal degree requirement may be made for individuals whose experience and accomplishments compensate for, or make irrelevant, the lack of a terminal degree. A request for an exception is subject to prior approval by the Provost following receipt of supporting documentation and the dean’s recommendation (UGA Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure, p.22)

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

All candidates must have at least one year of experience in teaching production courses at the university level.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Applicants with adjacent areas of expertise such as screenwriting, pre-production and/or post-production are preferred. Knowledge of current industry standards and practices is preferred. A demonstrated commitment to work with students of all backgrounds and with students holding a range of worldviews is valued.
