SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences (DEOS) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology in New Bedford, MA, seeks research faculty candidates to appoint as full-time or part-time, non-tenure track faculty members who are qualified to engage in, be responsible for, or oversee a significant area of marine-related research or scholarship. These are grant-funded positions, with a 12-month term of service and the opportunity for multiple year and consecutive appointments. Research faculty may serve as principal or co-principal investigators on grants or contracts administered by the University. Research faculty may serve on departmental, college/school and university committees but may not participate in personnel decisions. Research faculty also may serve on graduate student supervisory committees but may not serve as sole chairs of graduate student committees. The successful applicant will be expected to bring in-hand extramural grants to support an externally funded research program in an area of strategic interest to DEOS, and to provide support for her or his own salary and fringe benefits. Research areas of particular interest to DEOS faculty and graduate students are marine biogeochemical cycles, coastal ecosystem dynamics, ocean physics, oceanographic modeling, ocean observation and remote sensing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in a marine-relevant area or engineering.

EXPERIENCE: Candidates must have a proven record of research accomplishment through publication in peer reviewed journals and participation in externally funded research projects in an area of strategic interest to the University. Candidates for this position must have a secure source of external funding that can be used to support the costs of their salary and fringe benefits - for example grant funding from a State or Federal agency.

The level of appointment (assistant, associate or full research professor) for a successful applicant will be determined at the time of hire based on the candidate's research accomplishments as compared with the tenure and promotion criteria in the area of Scholarship and Professional Development for the assigned academic department.

OTHER: Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in scholarly accomplishments, and a capability to build a strong research program with extramural support.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Background and experience in a marine-related research area of strategic interest to the School of Marine Science and Technology at UMass Dartmouth.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A track record of successful grant proposal submission and funding as a principal investigator. Strong written and oral communication skills. A demonstrated ability to be a productive member of a research collaboration.
