Statement of the Job:

The Department of Art in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Maine seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art who will serve as the Director and Curator of its Lord Hall Gallery. Responsibilities include teaching studio courses in area(s) of specialty (ordinarily a 2/1 teaching assignment) as well as overseeing all aspects of the department’s Lord Hall Gallery, including an annual exhibit of student work in Stevens Hall. This is an academic-year position with an anticipated start date of August 29, 2022.

Lord Hall Gallery links the Department of Art to the UMaine community and contemporary art practice. Each year the gallery presents exhibitions by faculty, students, and contemporary artists from around the world. The Director and Curator of Lord Hall Gallery will be responsible for the planning, operation, and promotion of its exhibitions, programs, and website, and for the coordination of curricular engagement with UMaine faculty. Areas of oversight include exhibition development, installation, and promotion; educational programming and campus and community outreach, including coordination with the University’s Zillman Art Museum; budgeting; staffing; facility maintenance; and caring for the department’s Vincent A. Hartgen Teaching Collection of paintings and works on paper.

The Department of Art is a NASAD-accredited program offering BA and BFA degrees in Studio Art and BA degrees in Art Education and Art History. The department seeks candidates who will serve as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in Studio Art, research and/or creative activity, and university and professional service. Due to responsibilities associated with the gallery, the ordinary teaching load is three courses per academic year. The area of specialty is open, but we are especially interested in candidates with teaching and exhibition records in drawing, illustration, 2D design, and graphic design. Among the courses the hire will teach is an annual semester-long capstone course for senior Studio Art majors. The capstone course focuses on the development of professional practices in the visual arts and culminates in a capstone exhibition in Lord Hall Gallery.
