The Biology Department is home to more than 1,400 undergraduate majors (BS in Biology and BS in Biochemistry) and instructs more than 17,000 students each academic year. The Department of Biology is broad in its representation of different biological subdisciplines and emphasizes integrative approaches drawing from across the natural sciences. Faculty and students in the Department of Biology have ample opportunity to collaborate with others, including those at East Carolina University’s College of Engineering and Technology, Brody School of Medicine, and School of Dental Medicine. The department and its shared research facilities (Microscopy, Genomics, and a vivarium) will soon be located in the new Life Science and Biotechnology Building, a gateway to a growing, vibrant downtown district in the coastal region of North Carolina. The microscopy facility provides essential resources and training for light, fluorescence, and electron microscopy and is overseen by a tenured faculty director.

Job Duties :

The Department of Biology at East Carolina University is seeking a full-time (12-month, fixed term) faculty position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor with expertise in microscopy, beginning July 1, 2022. The successful candidate will be expected to teach two lecture/lab sections per semester related to microscopy (e.g., theory and hands on instruction in microscopy techniques and specimen preparation) and/or upper-level elective in the faculty member’s area of expertise (including, but not limited to Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, or Genetics). Furthermore, the successful candidate will work closely with the Director of the Imaging Facility and operate and maintain the high-end microscopic imaging systems within the facility, including two Zeiss confocal microscopes, a variety of widefield and dissecting microscopes, and a FEI Quanta scanning electron microscope. The successful candidate will also be responsible for instructing students and faculty in the proper use of the equipment in the facility and providing them with technical assistance. Other responsibilities include user consultation and assistance on experimental design and specimen preparation, maintenance of facility use records, oversight of electronic billing system, promotion of the facility and tours for local STEM educational events, and facilitation of demonstrations and workshops on light microscopy topics and new microscope technologies.

Minimum Education/Experience :

A Ph. D. in Biology or a closely related field such as, but not limited to, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Physiology, or Anatomy and Cell Biology. All education must be documented from an appropriately accredited institution. 2 years experience in operation of widefield, confocal, fluorescence light microscopes and/or scanning electron microscopes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience in delivery of individualized and/or course-based microscopy training or other course-based teaching.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

The candidate should have demonstrated experience in: operation of; maintenance and troubleshooting of microscope equipment; image data processing and analysis; data storage and computing requirements for microscopy software. Demonstration of commitment to enhancing and enriching the user experience, from experimental design to data publication.
