Job Description

The School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Ecohydrology and Watershed Management. This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment. We seek an applicant with expertise in ecohydrology and watershed management, broadly defined, whose interests will support, build, and complement the School of Forestry’s and NAU’s programs in these and related areas. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in support of our undergraduate and graduate forestry programs, develop a productive, externally-funded research program, advise graduate students (MF, MS, and PhD), and serve the School of Forestry, Northern Arizona University, and the profession.

The anticipated start date for this position is August 2022.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in ecohydrology, watershed management or a closely related field conferred by the start date.
  • At least one degree in forestry or a closely related natural resource management field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated record of securing, or evidence of the potential to secure, external funding to support research.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in subjects such as ecohydrology or watershed management.
  • Professional experience working in fields closely related to ecohydrology and watershed management.
  • Demonstrated experience with or commitment to working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

General Information

The School of Forestry offers B.S., M.F., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Our faculty represent a diversity of scholars and educators from multiple disciplines and cultures who address local, regional, and international forestry issues. Our academic and research programs are internationally recognized for their excellence. Our location in the ponderosa pine forests of Northern Arizona and our proximity to life zones ranging from Sonoran Desert to alpine tundra provide an ideal place to teach and conduct research. Our well-equipped facility jointly houses the School of Forestry, the Ecological Restoration Institute, Centennial Forest (education and research forest), and a unit of the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station.

NAU is located amongst numerous tribal nations with one of the highest population densities of Native Americans in the U.S. Forest resources are critical to tribal nations, with Native American forest and woodlands making up approximately 5 million ha in the Southwest and ancestral Native American lands comprising Forest Service and Park Service land base as well. NAU´s Mission statement includes strong support for diversity and inclusiveness, specifically including partnering with Native American communities, tribal colleges and universities; currently 24 Tribal Colleges and Universities are partners with NAU. There is a Native American Cultural Center that houses the Office of Indigenous Student Success as well as a department of Applied Indigenous Studies. The NAU School of Forestry has a long history of Indigenous engagement including a Native American Forestry Program, extensive research and outreach links through Native undergraduate and graduate students, and a legacy of educating a high proportion of southwestern tribal foresters.

Flagstaff is at the center of nationally recognized examples of collaborative landscape-scale restoration of forest ecosystems, such as the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) and the Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project. Ongoing and planned comprehensive restoration and fuel treatment activities, including thinning of small diameter trees, present unique challenges and opportunities for forest utilization and provision of forest products. A variety of local and regional stakeholders (such as the Greater Flagstaff Forests Partnership) and state, tribal, and federal land managers are interested in effective product/market/technology options that are compatible with restoration-oriented forest management.

Northern Arizona University has a student population of 31,073, including approximately 23,000 on its main campus in Flagstaff and the remainder at more than 20 locations statewide and online. While our emphasis is undergraduate education, we offer a range of graduate programs and research. Our institution has carefully integrated on-campus education with distance learning, forming seamless avenues for students to earn degrees.

Flagstaff has a population of about 70,000 and is rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Canyon de Chelly, and the San Francisco Peaks, a Traditional Cultural Property sacred to numerous Tribes.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

$60,000 - $65,000, depending on qualifications and experience.


Benefits

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
