Position description

The Department of Psychology and the African American Studies Program at the University of Mississippi invite applications for a tenure-track joint appointment in Clinical Psychology and African American Studies at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2022. Although the area of specialization is open, the candidate will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses (including developing a cross-listed course in Black Psychology) and supervise Clinical Psychology graduate students in their research and clinical practicum work, ideally from a multicultural perspective. Applicants should have a record of research productivity and a plan for developing and maintaining a substantive research program that could attract external funding, as well as interest in recruiting and mentoring graduate students. The tenure granting department will be Psychology, with teaching duties split between the two departments, based on specific needs.

Psychology and African American Studies

The Psychology Department consists of 25 full-time faculty members and over 60 graduate students. Graduate programs include the APA-accredited doctoral program in Clinical Psychology and a doctoral program in Experimental Psychology. The Clinical Psychology program adheres to a scientist-practitioner model of training, with a particular focus on behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Our graduate psychology programs were joint recipients of the 2021 Donald R. Cole Excellence in Promoting Inclusiveness in Graduate Education.

The African American Studies Program boasts award-winning faculty and develops and coordinates an interdisciplinary curriculum that focuses mainly on the African American experience in the United States, with particular emphasis on Mississippi and the South. Its objectives are to encourage all students and faculty to examine the African American experience, to facilitate a cultural and intellectual atmosphere on campus that promotes such studies, and to develop a program of research and community service. The African American studies program offers various student scholarships, including the Fannie Lou Hamer Scholarship.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be committed to evidence-based practice and have completed a PhD in clinical psychology and predoctoral internship from an APA-accredited program by the time of appointment in August 2022. Applicants should intend to pursue licensure in the state of Mississippi.
