This tenure-track position is included in the University of Mississippi, College of Liberal Arts inaugural cluster hire. This faculty cluster hire initiative is designed to expand our understanding of multicultural competence as it relates to successful, effective, and ethical leadership with an emphasis on the experiences of African Americans and other underrepresented groups in the U.S. South and attention to identities with respect to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. The Department of Music and the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies seek an ethnomusicologist, with an emphasis in gender and race, for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Music with a joint appointment in Gender Studies starting Fall 2022. The successful candidate must have a PhD at the time of appointment. Candidates should show promise in research, scholarship, and teaching, strong leadership capabilities, and a demonstrated commitment to working with underrepresented groups.

The appointee’s responsibilities include (1) producing cutting-edge research, scholarship, and creative achievement focused on gender, race, with a particular focus on the Black experience; (2) advancing the Master of Music in Ethnomusicology degree program; (3) teaching courses for the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies; and (4) supporting the newly established emphasis in Gender Studies in the PhD in Music Education program.

The appointee will be expected to teach ethnomusicological courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, direct dissertations, advise students, and participate in departmental initiatives. The prospective faculty member’s gender-themed courses may include students from multiple programs (such as Music, Gender Studies, African American Studies, Southern Studies, the Honors College, and Sociology). The hired faculty member’s home department will be Music. The appointee will be expected to collaborate on recruiting underrepresented groups, in alignment with the University of Mississippi’s broader diversity, inclusion, and equity goals (
