Position Description

The Department of Kinesiology at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time Lecturer in Motor Behavior beginning in August of 2022. We highly encourage candidates with specializations in any of the following areas including, but not limited to the following to apply: motor learning, motor development, biomechanics, or measurement and evaluation. The faculty member selected for this position will be required to teach motor learning, motor development, or biomechanics at the undergraduate level and graduate level, and may also have the ability to teach other courses within the undergraduate and general education programs. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels with the potential for teaching excellence in the classroom and through online modalities.

Required Qualifications

• Doctorate degree in relevant field.
• Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate classes in motor learning, motor development, biomechanics, and/or measurement and evaluation as well as major classes and/or general education classes as needed.
• Must have academic training grounded in Motor Behavior and/or Biomechanics.
• Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

• A comprehensive understanding of kinesiology as an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary endeavor, and enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary department.
• Ability to supervise master’s student projects or theses.
• Experience working with racially diverse students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of groups within higher education, and the profession, shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
• Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support historically underserved students.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach motor learning, motor development, biomechanics, and/or measurement and evaluation. May also be expected to teach major classes, general education classes, and support other departmental needs.
• The candidate may have the opportunity to work with graduate students on their research and culminating projects and/or theses.
• The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
• The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advising.
