Position Summary:

The Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University seeks a scholar specializing in Critical Rhetorical Studies of Race to join our faculty as a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor. We are especially interested in someone who specializes in African American Rhetoric, African Diaspora Rhetoric, or any work at the intersection of Black/Africana Studies and Rhetorical Studies. NIU is a Carnegie Research University (High Research Activity) and is a member of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. The University earned the 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The Department of Communication and University are committed to diversity and belonging. The NIU main campus is located near the western suburbs of Chicago and offers the advantages of a nearby cosmopolitan atmosphere in a semirural setting. The Department of Communication, one of the largest of the 19 departments in NIU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Communication Studies and Journalism and an M.A. in Communication Studies. The Department serves a diverse student body including approximately 350 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students with 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 10 instructors, and 4 full-time staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Candidates should demonstrate a research program that can lead to tenure and a national reputation as well as demonstrate success in teaching at the undergraduate level and potential for successfully teaching in our M.A. program. This colleague will teach classes such as rhetorical methods, rhetorical theory, intercultural communication, argumentation, our introductory survey of Communication research, and in their area of expertise. Tenured and tenure-track faculty teach five 3-credit hour classes per year, regularly publish peer-reviewed research, and engage in service activities appropriate to their rank.

Organization

Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Colleges include business, education, engineering and engineering technology, law, liberal arts and sciences, health and human sciences, and visual and performing arts.
