Job Description Summary

The Dean of Students coordinates the administration and direction of Marymount’s departments of Student Engagement and Leadership, Residence Life and Student Conduct/Community Standards. The Dean of Students serves as the primary advocate for Marymount’s undergraduate and graduate students and collaborates with students, student leaders, colleagues, and other administrative and academic offices to promote student success, satisfaction, retention, and graduation consistent with Marymount’s strategic planning efforts. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs and serves on both the division’s Senior Leadership Team as well as the University’s Extended Cabinet.

Provide supervision and mentorship to the departments of Student Engagement and Leadership, Residential Life and Student Conduct/Community Standards.  Develop key collaborative relationships with campus administrative areas, faculty, and campus and community leaders to enhance planning and implementing strategic initiatives, resolving issues, and responding to crisis incidents.  Serve as a member of the University’s Threat Assessment Team and respond to major crisis and other unusual events impacting students within the University Community.

Provide leadership and guidance in annual analysis, review, creation and interpretation of student policies and procedures which are outlined in the University’s Student Handbook.  Develop strategies for promoting student engagement and learning in collaboration with Academic Affairs.  Communicate effectively with students and other stakeholders.  Work closely with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to foster an inclusive University community and promote equity for all students.


Provide direction to the Department of Residence Life to promote living/leaning experiences that are relevant to Marymount’s growing residential populations.




Candidates must possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in higher education or a related field, as well as a minimum of 7 years of higher education experience in the area of Student Life with progressively increased responsibilities.


A record of success as a supervisor, including but not limited to performance evaluations, professional development, setting individual goals, and assessment of performance effectiveness.


Demonstrated professional effectiveness with broad experience interacting with and supporting the needs of a diverse student population.


A high level of collegiality in working with other student affairs units as well as campus and community constituencies along with the ability to build collaborative relationships characterized by mutual respect, trust, and commitment to shared goals consistent with Marymount’s RSHM mission.


Integrity, creativity, energy, and decisiveness along with the capacity to engage and inspire others


Highly effective in all aspects of crisis management, including the ability to work collaboratively with others in managing crises.


Experience in setting priorities and deadlines to ensure strategic planning goals and objectives are met.


Strong skills in developing and managing budgets.


Nuanced understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including thoughtful ideas about how to meet the needs of Marymount’s diverse student population.


The Dean of Students is required to reside within 10 miles of Marymount’s main campus in Arlington, VA.

All undergraduate and some graduate programs require an internship. Internship sites include congressional offices, the Smithsonian museums, and federal agencies; corporations and technology companies; professional associations; educational institutions; health care facilities; and nonprofit organizations.

This 21-acre campus is comprised of classroom buildings and laboratories, including a computer lab, faculty and administrative offices, and residence halls. Housed in the Emerson G. Reinsch Library are the Learning Resource Center, the Instructional Media Center, the Reinsch Auditorium, the Lee Reception Room, and the Barry Art Gallery. The Rose Benté Lee Center is the University’s community focal point, featuring the 1,000-seat Verizon Sports Arena, a fitness center, Bernie’s café, the University bookstore, a recreational gym, the swimming pool, a lounge, athletic offices, and meeting rooms.
