Job Category: Faculty - Tenure Stream (continuing)
Faculty/Division: Faculty of Arts & Science
Department: Department of Earth Sciences
Campus:St. George (Downtown Toronto)

Description:

The Department of Earth Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Mineral Systems. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, or related discipline, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and in teaching. We seek a broad range of candidates whose research and teaching interests enhance our existing departmental strengths and add new, innovative approaches. Recognizing the critical importance of mineral resources in the green energy transition and also the need to sustainably steward those resources, we seek candidates who are pursuing innovative and independent research on Mineral Systems including (but not limited to) ore deposit modelling, mineral geochemistry and exploration, water-rock interactions, biogeochemistry, geophysical imaging of mineral systems, geologic sequestration, groundwater and mining waste remediation. We are seeking candidates who are forward-thinking, addressing cutting-edge scientific questions in one or more of these areas of specialization and who will establish a robust, externally-funded research program. Expertise in state-of-the-art analytical or data-science orientated methodologies including geostatistics or machine learning to promote scientific discovery would be strong assets.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, a track record of obtaining independent research funding, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. We are seeking candidates who will contribute substantively to both the graduate and undergraduate teaching in the Department. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, teaching dossier submitted (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference. Bringing new perspectives to the Department, and bringing experiences and meaningful plans for connecting to groups that have been historically marginalized in the geosciences, are criteria that will be considered in our evaluation of excellence.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applicants must submit:

  1. Cover letter (maximum 1 page)

  2. Current curriculum vitae

  3. A research statement outlining current and future research interests (maximum 3 pages)

  4. Copies of three most significant research publications

  5. A teaching dossier, which should include:

  6. a statement of teaching interests and philosophy (maximum 2 pages)

  7. sample course materials

  8. teaching evaluations

  9. any other documentation demonstrating excellence in teaching, which can include activities as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, mentorship, outreach or conference presentations or posters.

  10. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates are therefore also asked to submit a 1‐2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each after an application is submitted (this happens overnight). Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date.

Submission guidelines can be found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply. Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two PDF files. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Ampy Tolentino, Assistant to the Chair of Earth Sciences, at geol_sec@es.utoronto.ca.

All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by February 15th, 2022.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
