Responsibilities The Florida State University seeks a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist to serve as its Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellow. The position is funded for two years and requires residency at Florida State University. DPAA Research Partner Fellows are issued taskings from the DPAA that involve conducting geospatial analysis in a historical context that is related to U.S. military losses in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While creating research products that materially help the DPAA honor, identify, and repatriate unaccounted-for personnel, DPAA Research Partner Fellows also maintain an active presence on campus, leveraging the assets of their home institutions to serve the DPAA. Researchers are sought with a background in GIS, with expertise possibly including but not limited to geovisualization, large-scale spatial data analysis, historical GIS and digital humanities, and/or remote sensing.

The Fellow will work on research projects assigned by the DPAA that support the Agency’s mission to achieve the fullest possible accounting of American personnel missing from twentieth-century conflicts. Being interdisciplinary in nature, the research may include elements beyond GIS work and is not limited to any one topical focus; historical research and writing, digital humanities projects, public history work, etc. may all come into play. Strong writing and data collection/analysis skills, along with an ability to collaborate with others, are required for this position. The DPAA Research Partner Fellowship requires a time commitment of 40 hours per week on DPAA related work and outreach activities.

The Fellow is expected to maintain a presence on campus. As a part of their responsibilities, the Fellow will be asked to teach one course per year in GIS, and will be encouraged interact with and mentor students. The Florida State University seeks a person who, in concert with DPAA, will engage the community and other stakeholders to raise awareness about issues related to the identification of unaccounted-for remains.

Qualifications

Earned doctoral degree in geography/geographic information science or related disciplines (e.g. planning, development, engineering, geomatics,etc.) is required. Advanced doctoral candidates well into their ABD status with completion of the dissertation imminent will also be considered.

This position is time-limited based on soft money funding, with renewal contingent upon available funds and the needs of the University.
