The Collection Development Librarian oversees collection development operations for U.S. materials to ensure that the Law Library's collections support current and future educational and research activities of the students, faculty, and other patrons affiliated with the Law Center. They coordinate the activities of the library's designated subject specialists and guide them in the application of collection development tools, policies, and principles; and serve as a principal resource for librarians, faculty, staff, and vendors on U.S. collection development issues, developing systems to work effectively with all groups. In consultation with the Library Director and others, they plan the library collection development strategy, and serve as the final decision maker for the majority of purchases of library materials and resources. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Collection Development Librarian has duties that include but are not limited to:

Collection Development
  • Plan library collection development strategy for U.S. materials, establish long- and short-range goals and objectives, and set priorities; and develop, implement, and evaluate projects and statistics to achieve these goals
  • Organizes regular review and updating of Collection Development Policy
  • Interprets the library's collection development program for the Law Center community.
  • Working Library leadership, develops procedures for working with vendors, faculty, and library departments


Collection Development Committee
  • As Committee Co-chair with the Head of Content Acquisitions, set meetings and plan agendas and projects
  • Coordinate the selection criteria and process among Committee members
  • Coordinate with Library leadership to assign responsibility for specific subject areas to at-large members
  • Train and instruct subject specialists on procedures, selection tools, and assessment methods
  • Review U.S. selector purchase decisions for conformity with policy and productivity goals
  • Build the collection in designated area(s) and select materials in American Law generally
  • Coordinate de-selection and other special projects


Approval
  • Authorize purchases and cancellations and approve large expenditures charged to restricted accounts - in consultation with the Library leadership
  • Using collection analysis tools, analyze and adjust collection purchasing patterns
  • Coordinate with Library Research Services the acquisition of faculty resources
  • Define methods for approving purchases
  • Coordinate approval plans and develop library profiles
  • As primary contact for donors, determine and apply criteria for gift acceptance and dispersal and make retention and location decisions on an as-needed basis


Budgeting
  • In consultation with Library leadership and the Collection Development Committee, plan and prepare the library's annual budget submission for collections
  • As needed, prepare a detailed budget for allocation of collection funds among designated units and subject specialists


Library Collection Representation
  • Serve as a principal resource for librarians, faculty, staff, and vendors on collection development issues
  • Inform Law Center patrons about new or notable resources held by the library
  • In consultation with the Library leadership and the Collection Development Committee, represent the library in cooperative collection development efforts, license negotiations with vendors, and resource sharing endeavors among libraries
  • Coordinate analysis and purchase of the proliferation of substantive and administrative/extracurricular electronic legal and non-legal sources
  • With librarians at other Georgetown libraries, work on collaborative collection initiatives, purchasing, and access matters


Reference, Research, and Instruction
  • Participate in reference, instruction, and research services in support of LC academic programs by research consultations, research guides, and participation in the journal liaison program
  • Participate in regular reference desk rotation, and in the faculty liaison program


Service & Current Awareness
  • Participate in various library committees and forums in support of library operations welfare or unit representation
  • Represent Law Library in professional organizations and actively participate in the advancement of the librarian profession; and serve in various leadership roles within these groups
  • By various means, maintain current awareness of new technologies and library trends


Qualifications
  • Master's in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent
  • Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited institution or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of library experience
  • Law library experience
  • Knowledge of legal materials
