Program Director for Academic Programs, Institute for Technology Law & Policy - Georgetown University Law Center

Georgetown Law's Institute for Technology Law & Policy is training the next generation of lawyers and lawmakers with deep expertise in technology law and policy. The Institute provides a uniquely valuable forum in Washington, DC for policymakers, academics and technologists to discuss the most pressing issues and opportunities in technology law today.

The Program Director for Tech Law & Policy Academic Programs oversees the student experience, program administration, marketing and development for Georgetown Law's academic offerings in technology law and policy. These are: a new LLM in Technology Law & Policy; a new Master of Law & Technology (" M LT", an innovative program designed for non-law students); Georgetown's existing Law Scholars program for JD students; and our general offerings for all Georgetown Law students who are passionate about technology law and policy. The LLM and MLT programs will admit their first students in Fall 2020; the Tech Law Scholars program began admitting students in 2017.

The Program Director's central responsibility is to develop the identity, academic caliber, and outstanding reputation of the 5 programs, and to enhance Georgetown's vibrant community focused on technology law and policy. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Georgetown's Institute for Technology Law & Policy, with an additional reporting line to the Assistant Dean for International and Graduate Programs, the Program Director for Tech Law & Policy Academic Programs has duties that include but are not limited to:

Student Development; Academic and Career Advising
  • Advise students regarding course selection, career preparation and relevant opportunities during their time at Georgetown Law
  • Understand Law Center policies, curriculum, and graduation requirements in order to convey this information clearly and accurately to prospective applicants and current students
  • Assist students experiencing academic difficulties and provide effective referrals to campus resources
  • Maintain confidential and accurate student files
  • Establish and sustain positive and collegial relationships with academic administrators, career counselors, and faculty in order to stay current on student experiences, successes and challenges
  • Assist with new student orientation, with a particular emphasis on incoming students for specific programs
  • Maintain information in Student Handbook and programmatic pages on Georgetown website
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential employers, and assist in connecting students to employment and internship opportunities
  • Develop methods to connect former students, adjuncts, and others connected to Georgetown Law who have experience or are practicing in tech law & policy
  • Assist in selection of students for awards and scholarships related to tech and IP field


Curriculum and Program Development
  • Develop curricular offerings for Tech Law & Policy academic programs, including capstone practicums for LL.M and MLT and other courses as needed
  • Undertake an annual comprehensive review, meeting with the Assistant Dean of International and Graduate Programs and relevant faculty to enhance the course offerings at Georgetown Law, reduce duplicative courses, eliminate outmoded courses, and recommend potential adjunct faculty for needed areas
  • Support and build community among adjunct faculty and provide them with pedagogical assistance to strengthen their performance in the classroom
  • Oversee relationship with partner programs offering courses for academic programs


Strategic Planning and Program Administration
  • In partnership with the Executive Director of the Institute for Tech Law & Policy, faculty, and the Assistant Dean for International and Graduate Programs, design and implement a strategic vision for the LL.M in Tech Law & Policy and Master of Law and Technology degrees
  • In partnership with the Executive Director of the Institute for Tech Law & Policy, review, update and implement the strategic vision for the Tech Law Scholars program and other curricular and co-curricular offerings in Tech Law & Policy
  • Create regular and ongoing opportunities for experts in the field to identify the most important skills to be developed in the Tech Law & Policy academic programs, including through engagement with alumni, faculty and career services
  • Assist in identifying, developing and maintaining relationships with partner schools and other programs connected to Tech Law & Policy academic programs


Co-curricular Activities
  • Organize co-curricular activities, such as on-campus speakers, networking events, community-building activities, and student competitions
  • Serve as Tech Institute liaison for student journal, The Georgetown Law Technology Review


Marketing and Recruiting
  • Market the Tech Law & Policy academic programs in the U.S. and internationally
  • Develop and contribute to written materials about the programs and help maintain relevant portions of the Georgetown Law website
  • Maintain an online presence for the program in social media


Qualifications
  • J.D. or LL.M.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience related to this field
  • Strong collaborative skills
  • Experience in and good knowledge of the field of technology law and policy
  • Ability to work independently and entrepreneurially
  • A commitment to excellence in the classroom, curricular development, and career placement for students
