Clinical Research Nurse (CRN), Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (GHUCCTS) designs and implements research that will have a high impact on underserved groups in our communities, including people from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, people with disabilities, and older adults.

The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) is an essential member of a multidisciplinary team member The CRN will function as an essential member of the multidisciplinary team that performs clinical research studies while simultaneously providing direct care to research subjects or patients of various health conditions and of different age groups. Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the CRN takes a leadership role as primary nurse, working as liaison between the study team, collaborating institutions, and the CRU to provide efficient implementation of the study protocol in duties that include but are not limited to:

Facilitates the Implementation of the Research Study
  • Ensures that all screening tests are completed and eligibility requirements are met; and schedules and completes tests per protocol guidelines.
  • Calculates drug dosages and modifications as outlined in the study protocol.
  • Reviews protocol frequently for treatment schema, side effects of drugs, and schedules.
  • Verifies presence of a signed Informed Consent Form in the research participant's study record before beginning participation; and assesses subject's ongoing consent at all follow-up visits.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to facilitate the implementation of the collaborative community research studies and to ensure quality patient care is provided.
  • Takes a leadership role within the CRU staff to ensure smooth and efficient conduct of off-site research visits.
  • Assesses the study risk to ensure appropriateness of procedures for the community setting.
  • Collaborates with the staff at Howard CRU and CRNs other centers ensure consistent implementation of the protocol.

Takes responsibility and initiative for performance and professional growth and development
  • Assumes responsibility as primary nurse for protocols to assist in the research process.
  • Acts as liaison with study team and CRU to assist with accurate and timely protocol implementation.
  • Prepares worksheets for protocols - e.g., orders, discharge instructions, and flow sheets.
  • Provides clinical background to other staff members.
  • Schedules in-services/education on protocol.

Ensures complete, accurate, and timely written communication of patient information
  • Collects, records, organizes, transcribes, and verifies the accuracy of research and patient care data.
  • Completes flow sheet and progress notes accurately and using correct forms.
  • Documents subjective and objective data as outlined in the research protocol or standard of care procedures, clinical impressions, and changes in the research plan in a legible and timely manner.
  • Documents and reports AEs in a timely manner following institutional policies.
  • Documents and reports protocol deviations in a timely manner following CRU policy and procedures.

Provides appropriate patient care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care guidelines
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age/developmental specific factors as necessary for safe and effective performance of duties.
  • Utilizes knowledge of age/developmental specific data when assessing and caring for patients, performing procedures or tasks, documenting patient response, and modifying approaches to care for identified patients.
  • Integrates knowledge of age/developmental specific care needs related disease process, diagnostic tests, treatment modalities, safety issues, and expected outcomes in assessing patient needs and planning care.
  • Utilizes knowledge of age/developmental specific care needs during an emergency response or when utilizing equipment.
  • Utilizes communication skills in obtaining information, providing education, and conveying patient needs sensitive to age and developmental level of the individual patient/family.
  • Maintains competence related to age/developmental specific patient care by regularly updating knowledge of growth and development, the aging process, and strategies to meet related need.

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia
  • BCLS minimum, though ACLS preferred, as well is chemotherapy certification
  • 3 years' of nursing experience - preference for acute care nursing and/or research experience
  • Solid basic nursing skills, including but not limited to, excellent phlebotomy and IV skills, ACLS, assessment, and implementation of nursing care procedures
  • Working knowledge of MS Word & Excel as computer skills are helpful and part of the daily functions of the job
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Self-directed, highly motivated, and collaborative multidisciplinary team member
  • Availability and willingness to work as scheduled or needed - week days, nights and/or weekends
