In the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in the School of Engineering, students at the undergraduate and graduate level receive help with university and school-level policies and procedures. Student Affairs also includes Equity and Inclusion Initiatives (EII), Global Engineering Programs (GEP), and the Technical Communication Program (TCP), which provide opportunities such as summer experiences, mentoring, fellowships, research grants, internships, academic support, and more. Our entire office supports the mission of helping students thrive in Stanford's School of Engineering.

The Office of Student Affairs seeks an energetic colleague to become our Director of Graduate Finance and Academic Policy.

Are you knowledgeable about graduate financial aid and academic policy? Can you allocate teaching assistantships and fellowships to departments and steward endowed graduate funds? Do you enjoy implementing systems to improve and streamline the work of your student services colleagues? If so, please apply to be the Director of Graduate Finance and Academic Policy in the School of Engineering.

The position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Engineering.

You would do the following:
  • Develop long range planning and policy for the School of Engineering's graduate fellowships and teaching assistantships.
  • Manage, develop, and forecast budgets for fellowship and teaching assistantship allocation. Steward $15 million/year from 150 endowed graduate funds.
  • Identify, clarify, and resolve graduate student financial aid and policy concerns in accordance with established policies and procedures, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgment. Mediate complex and sensitive issues.
  • Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university academic and administrative policies affecting graduate students within the School of Engineering. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures.
  • Manage the implementation of technology to enhance effectiveness, compliance, and business processes. Notably, partner with the School of Engineering's Finance Office on GFPS. Liaise with the University's Registrar's Office on new technologies and procedures.
  • Represent school/department programs and initiatives to both internal and external constituents. For example, represent the school (ex officio) on the University's Committee on Graduate Studies and manage relationships with the School of Engineering's Development Office.
  • Manage processes and programs to implement the goals of the Office for Student Affairs in the School of Engineering. For example, manage and participate in school selection processes for University awards, and manage the co-terminal master's fellowship, which helps low-income students attain master's degrees.
  • Coach, mentor, and train student services hires in the departments.
  • Identify, manage relationships, and negotiate with external and internal partners.
  • Lead university or school-wide initiatives and campaigns.

Education and Experience (Required)

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in higher education setting preferred. Experience working with Stanford's graduate student services systems, such as GFS, strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Required)
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, GFS, GFPS.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills.


Physical Requirements*:
  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
