Animation and Production
Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Unreal Engine for Game and Cinematic Production

The Animation and Production Department of DigiPen Institute of Technology is seeking qualified applicants to teach real-time engine workflow using Unreal Engine as part of our game and cinematic project courses. The instructor is responsible for delivery of educational material, including lectures, as well as evaluation and review of students, via homework, projects, or other indices. Ideal candidates will have teaching and professional experience in the gaming and/or film industry.

DigiPen Institute of Technology is a leader in game development and interactive media education. Undergraduate programs are offered in Digital Art and Animation, Computer Science, Game Design, Digital Audio, Machine Learning, Music and Sound Design, and Computer Engineering as well as graduate programs in Digital Art and Computer Science.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach and demonstrate use of one or more of the following knowledge areas in game and cinematic production pipelines:
    - Visual Scripting
    - Shader and material
    - Lighting and Visual Effects
    - Cinematic Production
  • Mentor student teams in research-based or industry-driven projects
  • Lecture and teach in classroom and/or lab settings, with responsibilities commensurate to a full-time teaching load
  • Continuing research and development in, processes and best practices using game engine production
  • Troubleshoot, propose and design tailored solutions to students’ projects
  • Engage in active collaborative efforts to develop and improve department curriculum in alignment with program outcomes
  • Participate in teaching-related service roles, including scheduled office hours, archiving of student work, and program assessment activities
  • Engage in institutional and academic service through participation in the Faculty Senate, interdepartmental committees, department service and outreach activities
  • Engage in active research/professional development through relevant personal work, via faculty colloquium events or professional conferences
  • Maintain a robust scholarly or creative agenda, and work proactively towards fulfilling the same, in close alignment with the institutional vision


Qualifications / Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Art, Interactive Media, Technical Art, Visual Effects, Science, or related field
  • 6+ years of full-time professional experience in the game or film industry, shipped titles preferred, published works, published research projects, or other body of work
  • 3+ years of full-time Unreal Engine experience
  • Strong understanding of team dynamics, team organization, and team communication
  • Ability to provide quality feedback, practical work solutions, and instruction in cinematic and game projects
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of full-time professional experience in the game or film industry, shipped titles preferred, published works, published research projects, or other body of work
  • Excellent knowledge of Blueprints in Unreal Engine. Knowledge of C++ and Niagara is a plus
  • Lecture experience, including professional talks or panels at conventions or events preferred
  • Instructor experience in a college setting, or other teaching experience
