Minimum Qualifications::

For this position, employees must have at least one of the following:

1. Master’s degree in ecology or environmental studies degree or higher from an accredited college or university; OR
2. See Interdisciplinary Studies; OR
3. Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
4. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above.

Desired Qualifications::

Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of expertise on the basis of:

  • Three years full-time equivalent teaching experience in Environmental Studies or equivalent at the postsecondary level.
  • Demonstrated ability, effectiveness, and interest in teaching introductory lab science courses in at least one of the following areas: ecology, water quality, ecological restoration.
  • Demonstrated expertise in culturally responsive teaching in environmental issues, particularly as it relates to environmental justice; demonstrated ability to address how one or more of the many dimensions of environmental justice (and injustice) impact the lives of people in underserved communities; Recent experience in integrating and addressing the critical perspectives that come from underrepresented educational backgrounds and pathways or scholarly understanding of the experiences historically marginalized groups in higher education in teaching, mentoring, service, and/or engagement.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in curriculum development and innovative teaching in science and field-based laboratories, including fluency with multimedia technologies.
  • Effective & demonstrable skills in assessing student learning outcomes at course, program and/or departmental levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
  • Experience with academic and/or career mentoring.
  • Experience in writing/managing grants.
  • Experience with program/departmental coordination or equivalent administrative experience.
  • Experience in the academic process of building new courses and/or program development.
  • Experience utilizing community partnerships to enhance student learning and success of the partners.
  • Training in and successful experience providing high quality online educational activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of community colleges.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities::

Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with any changes in District policy and/or the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
We seek a full-time faculty member to coordinate a rigorous Environmental Studies program relevant for the needs and professional opportunities of our region. This person will work closely with colleagues and community partners to help the college better understand the theoretical meaning of sustainability, and the real-world knowledge and skills needed to implement it.

Teach core courses in Environmental Studies, which may include Introduction to Environmental Studies, Introduction to Ecology, Water Quality, Ecological Restoration, and related courses to a diverse student population.
Participation with regional partners which include industry, employers, education, and government collaboratives that contribute and/or benefit from Environmental Studies.

Collaboration with district and college units to promote cross-discipline opportunities for student success.
Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions in support of student success.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience with relevant pedagogical techniques to engage diverse student populations such as African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.
Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Engage in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office hours; stay current on information as discussed in department and division meetings.

Provide an average of one (1) hour per week of college service that supports the division, college and/or District goals through active participation in one or more of the following categories: committee work on the department, division/school, college, and/or district level; non-classroom college, district, or community activities; department/division/school activities, events, or meetings; student club advisor activities or events.

Remain current in your discipline, of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to assist and support student success.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including comply with the applicable Course Outline of Record(s) (COR); respond to and evaluate student work regularly and consistently, inform students on a timely basis of their progress in the course throughout the term; and respond to student academic concerns, as appropriate, in a timely manner. Comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Selection Procedure: A screening committee will review application materials which are complete and received by the deadline. Compensation and Fringe Benefits: Full-time faculty are paid on the Academic Salary Schedule (see Wages for salary placement criteria in the Academic Employee Master Agreement located under Contracts on the District website). All premiums are fully paid by the District.
