Position description
The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at UC Berkeley invites applications to the Lecturer Pool for teaching positions in a range of undergraduate, studio-based practice courses, such as dance technique, sources of movement, choreography, and improvisation.

We seek artists/scholars committed to progressive pedagogical practices and creative research, and colleagues who will contribute to our ongoing anti-racist efforts and curriculum updates. We are interested in adventurous and dynamic thinkers and makers with clear artistic interests and trajectories. We welcome applications from artists/scholars from multiple genres of dance practice and performance.

Please note that we anticipate that all classes be taught in person following campus COVID protocols.

General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.

UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

The mission of the dance program within the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies is to engage students in critical dialogue and exploration around dance as a transformational practice. Our classes explore not only individual expression and creative production, but also the communities and larger cultural contexts from which dance emerges and is connected to. Broadening student inquisitiveness and critical exploration as well as teaching an expanded understanding of the historical framings of dance/performance from multiple perspectives is central to the curriculum. Our classes include readings and viewings, creative making, and critical reflection. We value experiential hands-on learning as well as tacit and embodied knowledge, and subject-centered classrooms that strive to be ethical, anti-racist, and accessible.
