Substance Abuse Counselor
Cornerstone at Helping Up Mission is seeking a Substance Abuse Counselor who will be responsible for providing counseling and coordinating counseling activities according to protocol for clients age 18 and over.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Substance Abuse Therapy Supervisor, performs the following duties:
  • Provide rehabilitation counseling to clients with a substance use disorder using multiple treatment modalities including Reinforcement-Based Treatment which is an evidence-based treatment approach that integrates motivational interviewing with structured involvement in work and social activities.
  • Coordinate clients' engagement in attending events consistent with treatment goals, including clinic appointments, NA/CA/AA meetings, employment appointments and recreational activities.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with the client's family members and/or significant other.
  • Coordinate access to community resources including job training, housing, recreation, and drug-free social contacts.
  • Monitor caseload's urine results and make adjustment to client's treatment plan accordingly.
  • Enter client activity data.
  • Develop and document clinic programming and procedures.
  • Inform appropriate staff member of supplies and equipment needs that relate to client services.
  • Comply with reporting requirements of state and local agencies, and according to Department of Psychiatry, and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
  • Serve as backup for other research and administrative duties.
  • Will complete other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Clinical Supervisor.


Additional Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Substance Abuse Therapy Supervisor the Lead Counselor will perform additional Clinical Duties which may comprise the following or other additional duties as necessary:
  • Retrieve urinalysis data for all clients, compose report of positive and compromised results, request additional tests (if necessary), and communicate outcomes to counseling staff.
  • Liaison for substance abuse and mental health counseling services.
  • Assist with new employee training.
  • Coordination of Prescreening/Referral forms.
  • Backup and maintenance of Substance Abuse (SA) statistics.
  • Serve as backup for other research and administrative duties.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work or other related field.
  • Must be licensed/certified in specialty field e.g. Social Work, Professional Counselor, Addictions Counselor as required by the state of Maryland and Board of Professional Counselors and Therapist.
  • Some experience working with substance abuse or related populations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree and three years experience working with substance abuse or related populations.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Experience providing, skills training or activity coordination desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to interact effectively with clients, management, Helping Up Mission personnel and partners, in addition to individuals from diverse cultures.
  • Computer experience required.
  • Flexible hours required, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.

Starting Salary Range: $16.29 - $22.38/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
