Job Description:


SUNY Empire State College seeks applications for an inspiring, experienced, and accomplished leader to serve as Dean of the School for Graduate Studies (SGS). The Dean has a broad range of responsibilities including planning, academic development, program delivery, academic quality, supervision of SGS personnel, enrollment management, and increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion across the school. As a member of the college's leadership team, the dean collaboratively identifies and/or accepts responsibilities that advance the college's goals and mission and move the college forward.


The School for Graduate Studies is dynamic, growing, and dedicated to providing high quality graduate education in accessible formats. The school offers 20 master's programs and 27 graduate certificates (https://www.esc.edu/graduate-studies/). The school is continuing its growth trajectory with a number of new programs in development and the launching the college's first professional doctorate in fall 2021. Due to the history of innovative program and partnership development, enrollment has more than doubled in the last five years. The new dean will be expected to continue this trend by mobilizing administration, faculty, and staff to strategically cultivate and implement opportunities for the school and the college.


The successful candidate will be an active and effective advocate for the school, and for graduate faculty, staff, and students, both within Empire State College and in the larger community in New York State and beyond. This will include working closely with academic leadership and members of the School for Graduate Studies to develop and implement a shared vision for the school, engaging potential academic partners, and representing the school to local communities and businesses. The Dean will support a culture of data-based continuous improvement, including actively developing and supporting initiatives aimed at tangibly enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff across the school and within the college.


Responsibilities of the Dean for The School for Graduate Studies include:


  • Overall oversight of the school, including the academic divisions and administrative offices
  • Oversight of academic and administrative assessment and continuous improvement
  • Oversight of graduate policies and procedures
  • Facilitation of new program development
  • Oversight of specialty area/programmatic accreditations (e.g., AAQEP & IACBE) and recognitions
  • Budget development and management
  • School-level strategic planning, in alignment with college-wide strategic and academic planning
  • Participation in Provost's Cabinet, Provost's Council, and President's Council
  • Development of partnerships with educational institutions and with public and private entities
  • Representation of the college and the School for Graduate Studies to external stakeholders
  • Ensuring adherence to all relevant college, state, and federal policies and regulations


Requirements:


Required Qualifications:


  • A doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university
  • A record of teaching and scholarly achievement consistent with the rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Familiarity with accreditation procedures, processes, and policies
  • 3 years' experience as an associate dean, department chair, or equivalent, preferably overseeing graduate level programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience developing and managing budgets
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion especially as it relates to supporting and retaining diverse faculty, staff, and students

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. in a field of study offered by the School for Graduate Studies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning
  • Experience in online and blended teaching formats
  • Experience in a role involving the supervision of faculty
  • Experience working in a collective bargaining environment
  • Experience with specialty area/programmatic accreditation
  • Program development experience
  • Strong record of partnership development
  • Record of successful grant applications and administration

Special Information:


  • This position is in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
  • Travel and overnights to regions with other Empire State College locations is required, along with occasional evening and weekend obligations.
  • VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.
