Assistant Professor of Agribusiness

Location: Columbia, SC

The Department of Agricultural Sciences (AS) in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) at Clemson University seeks to fill a 9-month, tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. The position is a 100% Research appointment with an emphasis on Agribusiness to work on fruit and vegetable marketing and policy. The preferred candidate will have specialization in Applied Agricultural Marketing, Policy or Trade, Applied Econometrics, or Experimental Economics. The position is located at Clemson University's Sandhill Research and Education Center (REC) in Columbia, South Carolina. Clemson University is an R1 Land Grant University, and the US News and World Report has consistently annually ranked Clemson University among the nation's top 25 public universities.

The Sandhill REC is a 600-acre tract of land situated in Richland County, SC (https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/research/sandhill/). The Center is an integral part of Clemson University's Experiment Station, including agricultural, wildlife, and forestry research and demonstrations, an incubator farm, the Sandhill Farmers Market, Agribusiness Extension, and the Richland County Cooperative Extension Service office. The Sandhill REC is home to the Agribusiness Center that conducts applied research and Extension programming related to production economics, marketing, policy, and farm management for major crops and value-added ventures. The location of the Sandhill REC is near major fruit and vegetable production and the South Carolina State Farmers Market.

Clemson's Agribusiness program within the Department of Agricultural Sciences was established in 2013 and has grown rapidly in eight years (https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/agricultural-sciences/index.html). The Agribusiness program consists of 8 faculty, one lecturer, and approximately 160 undergraduate students. The Master of Science degree in Applied Economics and Statistics was recently re-established and currently has ten students and expects to enroll 8-10 students annually.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized, innovative, and extramurally funded research program in Agribusiness. Research responsibilities should focus on issues important to the fruit and vegetable industry that can include but are not limited to blockchain, food safety, marketing technology, packing & grading, market channels, trade policy, consumer demand, and preferences. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty in the Department of Agricultural Sciences, other departments within CAFLS, and faculty housed at Clemson's Research and Education Center campuses across the state to promote the South Carolina agricultural economy. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to interact with stakeholders and commodity/industry groups in South Carolina and the Southeast region. There is an expectation of excellence in grantsmanship, timely communication of research findings through publication in peer-reviewed journal articles, and active participation in training and mentoring graduate students. Additional responsibilities include communicating findings effectively with stakeholders and serving on department, college, university academic committees, and professional committees.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications: A PhD degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics, or closely related field with a strong focus in agribusiness is expected at the time of employment. The selected candidate must have strong knowledge of marketing and policy issues confronting the agricultural economy and possess the interest and ability to be responsive to grower and stakeholder needs. Excellent written and verbal communication is required.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with documented ability to secure external funding to support an active research program, a record of high-quality peer-reviewed journal publications, and a dedicated interest (or demonstrated excellence) in applied research and dissemination. Experience in working as an active member in multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary research settings is also preferred.
