Assistant/Associate Professor in Applied Physics- Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Physics at Bridgewater College invites applications from candidates with expertise in mechanical engineering for a full-time faculty position starting August 2022.  We seek candidates who are engaged teacher-scholars and have a strong commitment to mentoring and advising undergraduates in applied physics and engineering at a liberal arts college.  The position will involve teaching courses at all levels of an undergraduate applied physics and engineering curriculum.  The department is in the process of redesigning our Applied Physics program to have an engineering focus. We are especially interested in those candidates who are interested in developing engineering lab courses appropriate for undergraduates and assisting with program development and design of laboratory and fabrication spaces.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A PhD in Mechanical Engineering or closely-related engineering specialty is required.  Exceptional candidates who are ABD or have earned an MS and have extensive teaching or industry experience will also be considered.  Candidates with experience in ABET-accredited engineering programs are especially encouraged to apply.

MISSION: Bridgewater College is a residential liberal arts college of about 1600 students with a vibrant core curriculum and a growing focus on undergraduate research. The College emphasizes creativity and innovation in pedagogy and research. Successful faculty members are dedicated to advising and mentoring students, contributing to campus-wide faculty initiatives, and maintaining an active research agenda. Bridgewater seeks faculty members eager to engage and support our commitment to the breadth and depth of learning as well as diversity and inclusion. Therefore, application materials should address how you might contribute to the College’s liberal arts mission or ways that this mission informs your vocation as teacher and scholar.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 as the first coeducational college in Virginia. Bridgewater offers bachelor’s degrees in approximately 60 majors and minors, along with four graduate programs, pre-professional programs such as medicine and law, and teacher licensure. The College is a member of NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. The vibrant residential campus is located in the town of Bridgewater, Virginia, near the city of Harrisonburg in the center of the Shenandoah Valley. An excellent school system, healthy business environment, numerous arts and cultural events, one of the state's lowest crime rates, and a variety of outdoor opportunities and historic attractions draw many to the region.

APPLY:  Please complete the online application at www.bridgewater.edu/careers, attaching a cover letter, cv, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy and research interests, and a list of three references willing to submit letters on your behalf. In your cover letter, please describe how your experience is a good fit for department seeking to develop its engineering focus.

DEADLINE:  Full consideration will be given to those applicants who submit application materials by January 7, 2022.
