Position Summary:

This position is on site at our Cullowhee, NC campus.

Serves as the campus-level point person for career readiness training, professional development, and community building, helps develop and support comprehensive training, creates new programming to address current gaps informed by qualitative and/or quantitative assessment data. The Associate Director of Professional Development and Customized Workforce Training has the responsibility to establish, maintain and grow relationships and partnerships across Western North Carolina. This includes partnering with corporate partners, local governments, and non-profits in the community as well as offices, colleges and academic departments at WCU. Using data and relationship building, as well as best practices, this position will be focused on identifying and developing high-quality professional development, workforce development and training programs are offered to meet the needs of the community. The Associate Director will recruit subject matter experts and professionals (including WCU faculty) to develop programming based on market needs for both rural and urban Western North Carolina. This position is responsible for providing positive customer service for customers and trainers as well as ensuring that programming meets (or exceeds) the expectations of the customers. Key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to identifying trainers, negotiating appropriate payments, ensuring effective content and instruction, as well as conducting evaluation/surveying of program customers and presenters. The Associate Director will work closely with other key members of the Educational Outreach team to analyze program data and provide feedback to the Executive Director. This includes working with the Business Officer to properly develop budgets and assess return on investment for programs. The Associate Director will also work closely with the division’s Public Communication Specialist to develop appropriate marketing strategies. Additionally, the position is expected to contribute to feasibility studies, provide reporting for long-term assessment and engage in strategic planning. Serving as a continuing education credit provider for relevant organizations is a critical part of the success of Educational Outreach. The Associate Director position will share the responsibility of seeking and maintaining those provider certifications for the unit.
To ensure optimum results, the Associate Director must possess and utilize proven leadership and management skills to effectively implement programs and plans. Other skills such as self-directed skill development, effective communication, experience with revenue generation, and a focus on diversity, and the ability to develop sound goals and objectives are critical to success in this position and the achievement of the goals of The Division of Educational Outreach and Western Carolina University. Knowledge of and experience with various operational software, development techniques and educational technologies are also essential to success in this position. This position typically works 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. However, there are often necessary hours outside those times/days. This position is also expected to travel regularly around the region.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s degree with three years of experience in training or professional development or the equivalent. This position will develop and implement professional development programs for businesses, industries, and community organizations. As regional travel is necessary in this position, a valid driver’s license is required. Also, as this position will be traveling to facilitate trainings in the region, the physical strength sufficient to periodically lift and/or carry 40 pounds of materials, equipment or supplies is necessary.
