Category: Research and Laboratory
Princeton University
Overview
PPPL has a postdoctoral position open in the area of computational plasma physics, to play a key role in the application and development of the Gkeyll code, which uses advanced discontinuous Galerkin algorithms to simulate plasmas with various levels of fidelity. We seek an energetic applicant who wants to be at the forefront of high-performance computing with applications to fusion energy research. This work supports an Advanced Project Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) project that aims to understand basic physics of advanced fusion concepts. The work will also support DOE Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) projects. This is an entry-level position at rank of Associate Research Physicist.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work closely with the Gkeyll team to add new physics capabilities for modeling various fusion devices, including mirrors and tokamaks, and improve the code efficiency. This will involve extensive coding in C++ and higher-level scripting languages, optimization on parallel supercomputers, and working on improving physics capabilities, such as the fluid and (gyro)kinetic solvers. In addition, detailed study of mirror physics is expected in collaboration with various university partners.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, astrophysics, applied mathematics, or a closely related discipline with experience in computational fluid dynamics or other computational physics areas.
- Knowledge of plasma physics at the graduate level is required.
- Experience with gyrokinetics and plasma fluid theory is desired.
- Experience with advanced CFD algorithms, C++, and modern computing tools is a plus.
- English communication and writing skills are required and so is being able to work in a team.
