Description:

Working as part of the University’s legal office led by the Chief Legal Officer, the incumbent will provide legal advice and guidance to clients across the University on issues related to administrative law, litigation, risk management, human rights, health law and policy. In doing so, the incumbent conducts legal analysis and research, and drafts and edits documents including letters, pleadings, policies, procedures and guidelines for the University. The provision of legal advice includes a general requirement to advise proactively on developments in relevant statutes, regulations, policies and case law, legal exposures as well as risks and liabilities in matters relating to University students, trainees, faculty and staff. The incumbent advises on potential or actual litigation involving University interests before internal tribunals, external tribunals and courts, based on research and analysis of the case, knowledge of University policies and procedures, and case law. While the position has a high degree of independence, consultation with other internal University of Toronto Legal Counsel is essential.

Qualifications Required:

I. EDUCATION:


A Bachelors of law degree (LL.B) or juris doctor (J.D.) degree. Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.

II. EXPERIENCE:


A minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in legal practice with emphasis on administrative law and litigation or litigation management. Experience drafting, analyzing and interpreting legal documents. Experience in drafting, interpreting and evaluating policies and procedural requirements. Familiarity and experience with the policies and practices of universities relating to administrative law, health law, regulated professions and/or regulated industries and experience with higher education issues, University structure and governance an asset.

III. SKILLS:


Demonstrated strong oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

IV. OTHER:


Excellent tact, judgment and discretion. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Able to work cooperatively and collegially with internal and external contacts.
