APPOINTMENT: Staff, Non-Exempt, 12 months/ 40 hours/Monday - Friday, 3:00pm - 12:00am

GRADE: S04

AVAILABLE: Immediately

DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision of the Custodial Shift Supervisor, The floor tech will be responsible for the maintenance of all floors / carpet areas and upholstery, and for sustaining high quality standards of cleanliness and sanitation. Strips hard flooring using heavy equipment in academic / administrative & residence halls, etc. Spot clean carpets, perform bonnet and extraction carpet cleaning, operate floor care equipment, buffers, automatic battery operate floor scrubbers, floor stripping machine, walk behind carpet extraction equipment, canister wet/vac, backpack floor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, and shop vacuums, Wear adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with chemicals and equipment.

Position may be required to work weekends as needed, temporary cover and maintain additional areas when short staff. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleans building's flooring and upholstery, includes carpet, hard floors, stairwells and furnishings.
  • Performs advanced cleaning procedures and care for carpeted floor. Moves furniture as required for cleaning, as well as coordinating with occupants on floor care scheduling.
  • May empty trash, and garbage containers.
  • Performs full operational maintenance on equipment as scheduled and needed
  • Measuring chemicals correctly by operating chemical dispensing stations.
  • Able to operate scrubber floor care equipment, carpet extraction machine, floor buffer machine, backpack floor scrubbers, hot- water pressure washer equipment
  • Labeling chemical correctly.
  • Cleaning, maintaining and storing equipment and PPE proficiently and wearing.
  • Keeping inventory of floor areas, and scheduling cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Reporting any equipment malfunction issues to supervisor.
  • Uses approved biohazard disposal methods as needed.
  • Resurface hard flooring using appropriate floor finish or other sealers.
  • Maintains department confidence and safe guards operations by keeping information confidential; adheres to all safety and University policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to Team Effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, one (1) to three (3) years of related work experience. Selected candidate will possess a good knowledge of commercial custodial floor cleaning techniques, customary custodial floor maintenance equipment and of safety regulation and procedures; good organizational skills; good communication skills; able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff. Be able to work independently, moving around campus with occasional exposure to inclement weather. Selected candidate must successfully pass an investigative background check, will possess a valid driver's license, and must be in excellent physical condition demonstrating physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job. Upon offer of employment, a pre-employment physical examination must be successfully completed and a current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record will be required. Occasional overtime and weekend hours are required.
