Position Summary::

The Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design (CTD) at The University of Alabama (UA) is seeking applications for the position of Department Chair. The successful candidate will be one who has strong academic connections and industry contacts, providing visionary academic and administrative leadership to a dynamic faculty and staff.

The CTD Department is housed within the College of Human Environmental Sciences (CHES), one of the largest such colleges in the U.S. CHES is comprised of five interdisciplinary departments united through a shared goal of improving the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities. The College has a long history of multidisciplinary scholarly activity and service implemented through its constituent departments: Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design; Consumer Sciences; Health Science; Human Development and Family Studies; and Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management. The CTD Department has vibrant and productive faculty, with 14 full-time faculty members, and robust student enrollment and program offerings. The NASAD-accredited program supports two academic undergraduate majors: Apparel and Textiles (with concentrations in Fashion Retailing and Apparel Design) and Interior Design, and also supports a M.S. degree in Human Environmental Sciences with an emphasis in Clothing and Textiles. The Department attracts a diverse group of students, and builds on enhancing diversity and developing global leaders by promoting experiential learning opportunities, including two study abroad programs, and requiring students to complete full-time internships during their study. As such, graduates of our programs are highly sought-after following graduation, with global placements in their fields and many graduates becoming successful entrepreneurs. The Apparel and Textiles program nurtures creative thinkers and problem solvers with a human-centered design approach. Students participate in projects incorporating accessible, inclusive, and sustainable design criteria. Apparel design alumni obtain positions with established fashion brands such as Oscar de la Renta, Brandon Maxwell, and Macy’s. The Fashion Retailing Program is an exciting growing program whose graduates pursue a variety of buying and merchandising positions with major apparel manufacturers and retailers such as Donna Karan, Hermès, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

The Interior Design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and consists of sequential learning that provides training in a critical aspect of interior design. Studios focus on residential design as well as healthcare, office, retail, mixed-use, institutional spaces, and a Capstone studio. It is ranked in the top 50 Interior Design schools in the U.S. and ranked by Design Intelligence as one of the “Most Hired from Interior Design Schools” 2019-2020.

Responsibilities:As the chief administrative officer of the department, the Chair will: 1. Provide leadership and advocacy for teaching, research, and outreach activities that articulate with the mission of the Department, College, and University.2. Supervise budgetary and curricular decisions.3. Mentor and support departmental faculty through promotion and advancement. 4. Encourage research and scholarly activities.5. Instruct undergraduate and/or graduate level courses when appropriate.

Qualifications for the Position1. A terminal degree (PhD or equivalent, MFA, or MArch, as appropriate) in one of the fields within the Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design’s programmatic areas, with 18 graduate hours earned in the discipline.2. Qualifications to be employed at the associate or full professor level with tenure.3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with faculty, staff, students, and university constituents.4. Knowledge of, or previous involvement with, accredited programs or specialty accreditors. 5. Academic or administrative leadership experience (preferred).6. Previous experience mentoring junior faculty and/or graduate students.7. Previous experience in distance education (desirable).
