Scope of Job:
The Department of Art and Design at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applications for a Lecturer I - one year appointment to start Spring 2022 in Painting/Drawing. Responsibilities include delivering quality instruction in the program, advising students, participating in scholarship activities serving the college, university or local community as needed, maintaining office hours, student advising and recruitment, and participation in departmental committees.
UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions, as well as a commitment to UTRGV's guiding principles (http://www.utrgv.edu/strategic-plan/strategic-plan/index.htm), which include promoting access to postsecondary education to a diverse student body and to becoming one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.A.

Teaching assignments may include: Drawing/Painting, Design I, and Art Appreciation. Candidates will be expected to have teaching experience and expertise in more than one area.


Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree with 18 upper division credit hours in 2D, Painting, or Drawing, or a Master’s degree from an accredited institution with appropriate professional experience may be considered.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Applicants should have a strong background in Painting/Drawing. The one semester lecturers hired to teach Art Appreciation will be required to attend a training workshop (one day) on the use of Blackboard and common online text. Inability to attend training may result in cancellation of assignment.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
