30-Nov-2021 Close All Job SummaryThe Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) encourages applications for the Program Director for Advisor Training, Development, and Assessment! This position serves as part of the advising leadership team in OUE that is devoted to supporting and unifying the broader advising and coaching community across campus, and is actively involved in the development, planning, and administration of a campus-wide vision for advising excellence by creating opportunities for a more unified approach to advising practice and scholarship. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert and is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing training and professional development programs, and assessment of key advising outcomes.
The Program Director collaborates with and reports to the Director of Campus Advising Initiatives and Strategy and serves as a resource and partner to advising leaders across campus. Critical responsibilities include managing and hosting the annual Conference on Student Success & Advising (CSSA); supporting the Advising Perspectives Program; and coordinating assessment efforts. The incumbent leads training and professional development communities of practice and also supports the professional development of academic coaches and supervisors within the community, in partnership with those groups. The incumbent will manage a broad range of administrative support activities, including creation and maintenance of Canvas courses and management of advising certificates.

Our charge is to examine the undergraduate student experience, assess student and program outcomes, identify gaps, and launch and support student-facing campus initiatives to promote student success. OUE is responsible for a variety of academic programs; international programs, including Education Abroad and International Student & Scholar Services; and the Program in Exploratory Studies, which is home to approximately 25% of entering first-year students each year. The Office is also the home to the campus first-year advising network and cross-campus advising initiatives. We collaborate with a wide array of campus partners to conceptualize and develop new student success initiatives that will enable CU-Boulder to recruit and retain a highly competitive and diverse undergraduate student body. What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeTraining
  • Develop and facilitate formal onboarding and training programs for all newly hired academic advisors and academic coaches on campus.
  • Develop and maintain current/up-to-date training content using the Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Identify and track learning outcomes, in close collaboration with key partners.
  • Work closely with all newly hired advisors to assist their transition to the university, including meeting with them as a cohort, monitoring their progress through the initial training content, and problem-solving any difficulties they face during their transition.
  • Mentor/train a network of point people in each advising program; assist them in managing their own complementary “next step” content that is specific to their unit; and provide assistance to each advising program in building unit-specific tools and resources.
  • Supervise seasonal project coordinators as needed.
  • Develop and maintain a common repository of advisor resources.
Professional Development
  • Develop and/or facilitate meaningful campus-wide professional development programs that enhance the practice and skills of current advisors and student support staff and promote leadership development, staff engagement, team collaboration, and change management.
  • Develop and be responsible for a comprehensive training and development framework that promotes inclusivity, diversity, and equity practices for advisors and coaches.
  • Manage the Certificate of Advisory Mastery program.
  • Support the Advising Perspectives leadership program.
  • Manage the annual Conference on Student Success & Advising.
Assessment & Technology
  • Manage assessment of advising outcomes, partnering with key campus partners as needed and building and facilitating related training resources, including Canvas outcomes course.
  • Assess, design, facilitate and evaluate advisor and coaching development programming and interventions to improve advisor and coaching effectiveness.
  • Monitor progress of staff as they complete the Canvas training and development course, providing feedback to supervisors and working with participants as needed to help them progress through the course.
  • Manage maintenance and iteration of existing Canvas courses and programs, engaging with staff to apply feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Create, revise, and edit content for various websites, providing up-to-date information and relevant tools for users.
  • Assess feedback from employee surveys/focus groups and develop additional methods for gathering data on training/development demands.
  • Collaborate with advising leaders in colleges, schools, and programs to gather input on training and development needs.
Community-wide Leadership
  • Lead or participate in campus-wide communities of practice, including supporting campus-wide DEI and antiracism training and development practices.
  • Serve as a resource to the advising community by consistently being aware of and up-to-date on trends in higher education, professional development and training strategies, CU Boulder policies and procedures related to advising, and content and skills applicable to advising staff.
  • Partner with the Director of Campus Advising Initiatives and Strategy to maintain and champion an academic journal.
  • Collaborate with the associate vice provost and other leadership members on the OUE advising team on various initiatives and strategic- planning.
What You Should KnowThe anticipated start date is February 2022. This position is expected to be hybrid, with some in-person and some remote work, subject to changing campus conditions.

  • Bachelor’s degree + 5 years of related experience – OR – master’s degree + 3 years related experience.
  • Academic advising experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience training professional staff or classroom teaching or workshop facilitation.
  • Experience with the assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Experience with instructional technology and tools.
  • Expertise in the profession of advising, including knowledge of advising theory and practice and student development theory and practice.
