The full-time nursing instructor works under the direction of the Dean of Health Sciences and Culinary Arts, the Director of Nursing Education, and Program Chairs, The instructor works collaboratively and collegially to provide instruction areas of nursing clinical practice, and simulation laboratories; provides ASN & PN nursing students with opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop clinical reasoning to make sound judgments, perform psychomotor skills, and demonstrate competency in the end-of-program student learning outcomes (EPSLO); prepares students for entry level into nursing practice and passing of their appropriate licensure exam; and, follows the policies and regulations of the governing institutions, Holyoke Community College (HCC), Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN), and the Accreditation Commission of Nursing Education (ACEN) standards for the ASN and PN programs and Centralized Clinical Placement (CCP).

  • Participates in BORN regulations approval, ACEN standards accreditation process and the Department of Nursing Systematic Evaluation Plan (SEP), adhering to all designated policies and procedures required for each and producing outputs designated for each.
  • Nursing instructors participate in the development, revision and maintenance of the concept-based nursing curriculum for clinical and simulation labs in alignment with the program’s current and nursing’s emerging best practices for concept-based nursing curriculum.
  • Mentored in acquiring concept-based curriculum knowledge, measuring program outcomes, developing competency statements, writing learning objectives, selecting appropriate learning activities and evaluation strategies for the lab and clinical setting.
  • Under the guidance of MSN prepared faculty, follows the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN test plans in the curriculum and test writing for lab and clinical; ongoing development of NCLEX and Next Gen format exam questions that complies with program testing policies and procedures following HCC Faculty Exam Manual.
  • Ensures simulation based education practices--development, implementation and assessment--align with the policies and procedures outlined in the program’s simulation manual/handbook.
  • Follows created college simulation lab learning experiences for student demonstration and evaluation of competent nursing skills based on student learning outcomes.
  • Assigns, supervises, plans and evaluates student clinical experiences in contracted practice learning environments across the curriculum with course specific clinical student learning objectives and program outcomes and assures safe patient care.
  • Assures students a safe learning environment and provides safe nursing care for all individuals or groups of individuals.
  • Supports working relationships with practice learning environments for student learning experiences.
  • Engages in nursing students' success strategies through student advising, recruitment measures, utilizing college and department support services that assist the learner in meeting their professional goals.
  • Works effectively as part of the overall department demonstrating positive interpersonal relations, communication, collaborating, mentoring with other faculty members to meet department and student needs.
  • Models professional behaviors for learners including, encouragement of an atmosphere conducive to multicultural learners and nursing student success.
  • Assist in data collection, analysis and aggregation of EPSLO and PO to establish informed decision-making.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate policies that are consistent with the regulations of the parent institution, or with differences that are justified by the goals of the programs.
  • Participates in College Shared Governance and Department of Nursing committees per MCCC contract.
  • Additional duties as required by the college.
  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED: For appointment as a Nursing Instructor the candidate must hold a current unencumbered Massachusetts Registered Nurse license by the time of hire; hold an earned baccalaureate degree in nursing; and, be matriculated in a graduate nursing program with an expected graduation date within five (5) years of appointment. The Nursing Instructor will be assigned instructional workload in the areas of lab and clinical instruction only. Upon graduation from a MSN program, the instructor will be eligible for change of rank as outlined in the MCCC Agreement, Article XIV and will be assigned instructional workload that includes didactic, lab, and clinical coursework.

    Prospective instructors must possess a minimum of two years of full-time experience in acute- and/ or sub-care medical surgical nursing experience or its equivalent within the last five years, and thy must demonstrate evidence of clinical competence in the area of clinical instruction per MA-BORN regulations [244 CMR 6.04(2)(b)4] with Waiver 1 approval. Nursing instructors must be able to demonstrate teaching skills in the clinical and/or lab area, including the use of interactive and varied pedagogical strategies; be confident and comfortable with technology-based instruction, including online course work; demonstrate commitment to teaching a student body diversified in abilities, age, ethnicity, race and sexual orientation; and, have the ability to work effectively with diverse faculty and staff.

    MA-BORN must approve the appointment of all BSN prepared Nursing Instructors under BORN 244 CMR 6.04(2)(b)3 Waiver 1. On-going employment is contingent upon MA-BORN approval of BSN candidates.


    *Applicants must provide documentation from the graduate nursing education program that they are accepted and to start classes in Spring, 2022 or are presently matriculated in the program and registered for Spring, 2022 courses. The documentation must provide the expected graduation date.


    NOTE: A teaching demonstration will be a required part of the interview process.

    PREFERRED: An earned master’s or doctorate degree in Nursing; CHSE certification; demonstrated experience working in healthcare simulation

    Full-time, tenure track MCCC/MTA position


    Salary: Minimum $42,453 - $55,000. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.
