The Music & Entertainment Industry Studies Department has an opening for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (unclassified) position.

This position will play a key role in leveraging CU Denver’s role as a Hispanic-Serving Institution to build institutional capacity for learner success, research, and scholarship. This position will be especially important in providing the creation of new, agile organizational structures that facilitate high-performance, interdisciplinary teams and uniquely integrate arts, humanities, and creative activities as part of CU Denver’s approaches to research and creative work.

As the first college in Colorado devoted exclusively to arts and entertainment, the College of Arts & Media understands the influence of modern trends on traditional art forms.  We combine the latest technology with traditional methods, and we encourage our students to incorporate their discoveries of art's emerging dimensions with our comprehensive instruction on its classical forms. The college enrolls 1,300 majors, has 120+ faculty and 25 professional support staff. Within the three distinct departments, Music & Entertainment Industries Studies (MEIS), Film & Television and Visual Arts. The MEIS Department primarily focuses on commercial music styles. Students are given the option to choose from four distinct emphasis areas of study: Performance, Singer/ Songwriter, Music Business, and Recording Arts. The Department of Film & Television offers students the opportunity to become knowledgeable about working in both Film & Television while delving into their special areas of interest. Degree emphasis areas in Visual Arts include Art History, Digital Animation, Digital Design, Art Practices, Illustration, and Photography. The College of Arts & Media operates two gallery spaces (the Emmanuel Gallery on the Auraria Campus, and the Next Stage Gallery in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts), that serve all faculty and students across the disciplines offered by CAM.

Department/Program Summary:

The Music & Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS) department is one of the few music programs in the United States to be recognized for its focus on modern and contemporary commercial music, located, integrated, and networked within Denver's vibrant and thriving music scene. With over 500 music students, MEIS is the largest public music department in the region—and one of the largest public higher education music programs in the nation. Our programs include industry-connected faculty, small class sizes, state-of-the-art facilities, five recording studios, and  student internship opportunities. MEIS alumni are frequently hired by major music industry organizations, develop successful careers in performance and recording, and serve as faculty in prestigious music programs. Collaboration with the other CAM departments of Film & Television and Visual Arts (with a focus on digital media) provides students with the integrated skills being sought by producers’, employers, and leaders in the creative indictors. MEIS faculty encourage the importance of assuring young artists, designers, creators and scholars have the tools to form their own creative identity.

Examples of Work Performed:

Teaching (40%)

  • Teach a 3/2 course load in the following areas: introduction to music publishing, music licensing, music supervision, and additional music business courses as needed by the department, and pertinent to the individual’s areas of expertise
  • Professors are responsible for the preparation of course syllabi, lectures, presentations, and student assignments; evaluation of student work; tracking and progress of student attendance and engagement; management of course in online platform Canvas; etc.
  • All other duties and projects as designated by the Chair
Scholarship (40%)

  • Conduct research and scholarship in the music publishing and licensing areas, with special attention given to emerging areas in digital platforms
  • Produce a professional portfolio, a distinctive record of achievement and publication through scholarly activity and leadership in the field of music business and the creative industries
  • Engage in professional development opportunities through leadership and participation in academic/professional conferences and colloquia, panels, webinars, training sessions, etc.
Service (20%)

  • Engage in and contribute to the function and operations of the department, as defined by the Chair
  • Work with the broader community in representing the university, department, and students

Salary:
The salary for this position has been established at $80,000.
The above salary rate represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in music or a field related to music business
  • Experience teaching/instructing music business content and/or music business related academic courses in an institution of higher education or comparable creative industries environment
  • Proven track record of professional development

Preferred Qualifications: 

    Earned Doctorate in direct or related field (ABD considered) Three or more years of successful experience teaching at the post-secondary level, with experience in music business and licensing/publishing areas 
  • Significant experience and success in the music and creative industries on a national/international level 
  • Extensive experience in the performance/composition area(s), with a national/international reputation

    Ability to establish and maintain effective teaching with a diverse group of students and working relationships with an accomplished faculty and skilled professional staff.Capacity to develop collaborative educational activities at cultural institutions in a dynamic and lively urban environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold student confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methodologies, developments, emerging and current trends within the industry 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high level of empathy, tact and diplomacy.
  • Successful experience in music publishing, licensing and music supervision.
  • Ability to develop courses that advance students in programmatic, departmental, and college goals to ensure that students are future ready.
  • Support learning through student engagement by creating a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning.Demonstrated knowledge in developing and monitoring student learning outcomes and student assessment strategies.Technological proficiency with online/remote learning platforms (e.g. Canvas) and ability to integrate technology in the classroom Commitment to student-centered learning initiatives Capacity and willingness to embrace diversity and inclusivity in campus community, curricular initiatives, the music industry, and perspectives
