Winthrop University, a highly ranked, public, comprehensive university, announces a national search for an Assistant Professor of Design. This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track appointment in the Department of Design within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This position requires daily contact with students, faculty, and staff on campus. Additionally, the successful candidate may be expected to occasionally participate in events in the evenings and on weekends. Candidates should have the desire to teach in an interdisciplinary, diverse, and highly collaborative undergraduate environment. Winthrop enrolls a diverse student body, which closely mirrors the racial and ethnic diversity in the state, and has recently received accolades for its success in graduating students of color.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in design history, theory, and practice and a commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to design studies. The department seeks candidates whose design process emphasizes human-centered methodologies and who has experience and education in interior design, and/or architecture.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach all levels in the undergraduate Bachelor of Design degree program, primarily in Interior Design and 3D Foundation; a typical teaching load is 9-12 credit hours / up to 18 contact hours per semester.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate design majors.
  • Maintain creative and scholarly activity as demonstrated by an active research profile.
  • Participate in curriculum development, accreditation, assessment, and program planning.
  • Fully support and participate in the department's student recruitment efforts.
  • Engage in professional stewardship and academic responsibilities to the department, college, university, discipline, and community, as appropriate.
  • Assume other responsibilities according to departmental needs and candidate's qualifications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a design discipline. Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in a design discipline and significant teaching and professional experience deemed equivalent to a terminal degree by the university may be considered.
  • National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification or eligibility to pass the NCIDQ exam.
  • Record of teaching, scholarship, and professional activity.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching.
  • Willingness to collaborate, communicate, and contribute to the growth of the department.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of university-level teaching experience, including experience working with diverse student populations.

About Design and the College of Visual and Performing Arts
The Department of Design is one of four academic departments in the college serving undergraduate majors pursuing a professional degree in design (graphic design, interior design, experience design, illustration). The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is the academic home to approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in dance, design, studio arts, music, and theatre. The College currently employs over 50 full-time faculty as well as part-time lecturers, all practicing professionals from the surrounding metropolitan area. Winthrop is one of only 37 universities in the United States and the only public or private institution in South Carolina with all five of its undergraduate and graduate arts programs nationally accredited (NASAD, NAST, NASD, NASM and CIDA).
