Aurora University
Director of the Wackerlin Center for Faith & Action

Aurora University seeks the next Director for the Wacklerin Center for Faith & Action, which is the campus' heart for service learning opportunities, diversity initiatives, leadership development programming, and campus ministry. The mission of the center is to be inclusive of all students and support and cultivate a student's journey of self-discovery through faith, service, cross-cultural understanding and experiential learning. The Wackerlin Center brings to life AU's commitment to helping students "discover what matters".

Founded two decades ago, the Center serves as a connecting point to a variety of volunteer opportunities in the diverse surrounding community, as well as offers numerous leadership development opportunities for "hands-on" learning experiences that combine service, volunteerism, and personal reflection. Students of all faiths, cultures, and backgrounds are equally welcomed in the common quest for meaning and purpose.

The Center houses Aurora University's campus ministry programming and builds on the university's faith-based roots while reflecting today's diverse student body. The retreat-like space offers students and the campus community opportunities and space to contemplate and discuss issues of faith, responsibility, identity, and leadership. Additionally, a beautiful outdoor labyrinth enhances the center's focus on exploration, understanding one's personal journey, and discovering what matters.

The Director of the Wacklerin Center is responsible for the carrying out the center's mission and will be student centered and possess a calling to serve in this unique, important capacity.

The next director will be a creative thinker and will be instrumental in working with senior leadership to ensure that the university honors its mission while welcoming and supporting students of all faiths, cultures, and backgrounds. They will be a leader who both generates new ideas and who naturally seeks opportunities to integrate the efforts of the Wackerlin Center with those of the broader community (and vice versa). Perhaps most importantly, the director will be a connector: creating a nurturing, student centered space and building relationships across campus. They will connect conceptually, weaving the work of the Wackerlin Center into the student experience and the life of the University. And they will connect with the wider community, seeking opportunities for mutual benefit and student learning.

A full description of the role and responsibilities, as well as a description of the ideal candidate, can be found in the position profile: https://academicsearch.org/open-searches-public/ This position is opened until filled. Review of applications will begin in January and materials received by January 20, 2022 will be given full consideration.

Organization

Working at Aurora University

Aurora University (AU) is an inclusive community dedicated to the transformative power of learning. It is committed to helping students discover what matters and build their life around it.

Academics

AU is a private, nonprofit, independent university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It offers more than 45 undergraduate majors — such as nursing, social work, business administration, criminal justice and psychology — and a wide variety of master’s and doctoral degrees that include social work and business administration. Degree programs are grounded in real-world experiences and are led by experienced, dedicated faculty members, nearly 140 of whom are full-time. The student/faculty ratio is 18:1.

Almost 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students take classes on two main campuses — Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois, and George Williams College in Williams Bay, Wisconsin — as well as the nearby Orchard Center in Aurora and the Woodstock Center in Woodstock, Illinois. Online classes are also available. The Aurora University campus is located 40 miles west of Chicago.

Athletics

AU has 24 NCAA Division III teams competing in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference, Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. About 700 student-athletes compete in sports. AU has a rich history and tradition of success across the spectrum of sport offerings. From conference championships to NCAA Championship appearances to academic awards and community service, student-athletes and staff continue to bring excitement and a sense of pride to Aurora University and all of the Spartan fans across the country. At AU, we firmly believe that intercollegiate athletics should promote the character development of participants, enhance the integrity of higher education, and promote civility in society. Toward these ends, we strive to adhere to fundamental values such as respect, civility, honesty and responsibility. Student-athletes and staff are always expected to operate with the principles of sportsmanship and ethical conduct in mind.

A Brief History of Aurora University

Founded in 1893 in Mendota, Illinois, as Mendota Seminary, the institution soon changed its name to Mendota College. By 1911, it had outgrown its facilities and the following year changed its name to Aurora College and moved to Aurora, where its students could take advantage of a thriving business environment and easy access to Chicago. In 1985, Aurora College changed its name to Aurora University to better reflect the magnitude of its academic offerings. Seven years later, Aurora University and George Williams College traditions blended when the two institutions entered into an affiliation agreement that paved the way for a merger eight years later. In 2010, the Woodstock Center opened to meet the needs of students in McHenry County and surrounding communities.
