The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is encouraging applications for a Software Engineer to support science data processing and analysis of scientific instrument data for NASA and private space missions. Every day our team strives to bring creative and innovative ideas to solve challenging problems. As a member of our team, you will apply your unique abilities to the development of data analysis and visualization tools, analysis of data, implementation of scientific processing algorithms, maintenance and improvement of existing systems, as well as the development of new capabilities. Specific needs for this position entail architecting and implementing “Cloud” solutions that use Amazon Web Services (AWS).


Our team works closely together and collaborates with scientists, mission operators, engineers, students, and other colleagues and partners. We are looking for applicants that connect and communicate well with mixed teams of students, scientists, other software engineers, and also with external customers such as the science community and NASA personnel. Applicants need to be able to learn quickly and multitask. On the job training is expected and mentoring/support is a highly developed part of our team dynamic.

LASP is a world-renowned space science research institute at the University of Colorado Boulder. CU receives more NASA funding than any public university in the country, due in large part to LASP programs. Professional engineers work closely with scientists and assembly technicians in designing and building space flight hardware while helping mentor students as entry-level engineers working on these programs. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Develop and implement software for the processing, analysis, and visualization of scientific and engineering data from space science missions on Linux-based systems using Python and other applicable languages.
  • Support science research efforts including collection and analysis of ground testing data and in-flight calibration data
  • Support scientists in developing algorithms and producing and analyzing data products
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, students, and scientists to develop software requirements that meet project needs
  • Communicate solutions by documenting, flowcharts, diagrams, and clear code
  • Apply software engineering best practices in the development process
  • Collaborate with and support teammates by reviewing the work of others for techniques, procedures, and technical approaches.
  • Teaching and Mentoring – Coach and assist student employees with their tasks.
What You Should Know
  • Occasional limited travel may be necessary to support remote instrument/project activities lasting up to 1 week at a time.
  • Candidates may be asked for software coding samples and/or participate in a coding exercise.

  • BS/BA in a physical or computer sciences, or related field.
  • 3+ years experience with software development, scientific programming, and/or data analysis in a commonly used programming language.
What You Will Need
  • Proficiency with the Linux command line.
  • Proficiency in architecting and implementing satellite data systems in the AWS Cloud environment.
  • Proficiency with containerization technologies, including Docker, as applied to satellite data pipelines.
  • Love of science and an interest in software-related technologies and analysis techniques.
