Job Summary CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

This is a professional (working) level position responsible for maintaining the operation of a computer database. The position ensures the database runs properly, remains current, makes user access readily available, and formulates and designs new database applications. The position makes decisions of varying complexity regarding procedures for set up of, access to, and operation of databases.

MAJOR DUTIES

1. Administers assigned databases; performs backup and recovery operations, database patching, and upgrades.

2. Provides support for assigned applications.

3. Troubleshoots and resolves a variety of problems and issues.

4. Develops software to automate processes.

5. Prepares documentation of tools, procedures, diagnoses, repairs and requirements.

6. Researches requirements of potential new services.

7. Evaluates the performance of existing services.

8. Manages user accounts.

9. Deploys solutions; manages system configurations.

10. Builds test environments to evaluate changes prior to production.

11. Provides end user support.

12. Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE CLASSIFICATION

1. Knowledge of relational database management software.

2. Knowledge of database performance and tuning principles.

3. Knowledge of server operating systems.

4. Knowledge of server scripting languages.

5. Knowledge of functionality testing procedures.

6. Knowledge of general networking environments.

7. Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and procedures.

8. Skill in collaborating with multiple constituents.

9. Skill in decision making and problem solving.

10. Skill in the provision of support to end users.

11. Skill in oral and written communication.

12. Ability to respond diplomatically to sensitive and critical issues.

13. Ability to effectively multi-task.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

· The supervisor assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

· This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

· The work consists of varied database administration duties. Frequent changes to industry standards contribute to the complexity of the position.

· The purpose of this position is to administer assigned databases. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of a variety of USG and institutional operations.

CONTACTS

· Contacts are typically with other system office employees, college and university staff, vendors, contractors, and members of the general public.

· Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

· The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.

· The work is typically performed in an office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and at least three years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
