The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of forest disturbance and forest conservation management. This appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in forestry or a related field and have a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose interests complement and strengthen our existing programs. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must have a research agenda in forest disturbance dynamics, including interactions and cumulative effects at multiple scales, and must demonstrate excellence in quantitative science with focus on forest management applied to the ecology of populations, communities, or ecosystems. We seek candidates with demonstrated experience and competency in forest spatial analysis who use field-based approaches and quantitative methods to address pressing issues in forest conservation and management. Extensive project organization and management experience, as well as an international network of collaborators and professional connections are required.

The Programs in Forestry are set within the Daniels Faculty, which includes programs in architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism at undergraduate, professional graduate, and PhD levels. The ideal candidate would have a broad view of forest management and forest ecology and a demonstrated capacity to contribute to other disciplines represented at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked journals, presentations at national and international conferences, and distinguished awards, along with the submitted research statement, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a history ot teaching excellence and a commitment to teaching at all levels including PhD supervision, student advising, and continued scholarly practice. They will be expected to teach courses in forest conservation, forest ecology, and natural resource management as well as to contribute to graduate courses in spatial ecology and statistics for both professional and research-oriented students. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Set within a preeminent research university and located at the center of one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities, the Daniels Faculty uniquely combines the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, art/visual studies, forestry and urban design in undergraduate, professional, and advanced graduate programs. The Daniels faculty explore the intersections between nature, technology, architecture, and various built and natural geographies in a way that situates design, art, and foresters to meet its contemporary challenges. An emphasis on the connections between all of the design disciplines at work in the remaking of the built environment is apparent in the scholarly research and built work of many of our faculty. Following a decade-long transformation of the school’s faculty and professional programs, and a recent, major increase in its endowment, the Faculty is expanding its undergraduate and graduate programs. Most recently, Forestry programs have been welcomed into Daniels bringing significant scientific and engineering capacity and facilities to broaden the research and teaching reach of the Faculty. To accommodate both growth in its curricular offerings and an increase in its research and outreach programs, an awarding winning new building complex for the Faculty was recently completed on Toronto’s historic One Spadina Crescent.
