Mount Mary's Department of Justice, Sociology, and History prepares students for careers in Social Justice ranging from making public policy to policing. With an emphasis on diversity and social justice, our students are prepared to go into the community and make change for the better. The department is seeking an Assistant Professor of Justice to enhance curriculum and networking opportunities for our students. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Justice beginning August 2022, in the School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Interdisciplinary Studies.
A Ph.D. in Criminology or Sociology, or a J.D. with relevant experience is preferred. Terminal degrees in other related disciplines, such as Criminal Studies, Criminal Psychology, Criminology and Justice, or Comparative/International Justice, will be considered. Preference is for a generalist with the ability to address issues of gender, race and class within the justice system. Applied experience with women in the criminal justice system is desirable. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and commitment to excellence in teaching students of diverse backgrounds. Candidates must be dedicated to improving the levels of competence and success for students from traditionally underrepresented populations within higher education.
The ability to teach courses in social justice issues and community/grass roots organizations as well as applied work with women in the criminal justice field are desired. The position requires both face to face and online teaching, service to the University, and professional development in publications and presentations.
Primary Responsibilities:- Teaching classes offered on campus and online using skills of communication, engagement, and adaptability.Develop and maintain a strong internship program.Provide service to the department, university, and community that demonstrates a commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Mount Mary University.Supervise students.Advise students.Engage in scholarly activities that support and advance the profession, including publication and/or presentation.Perform other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned.
- Experience in distance education and learning management systems desired.Experience working with/developing community programs/organizations.Strong working knowledge and understanding of established professional codes of ethics and best practices for faculty in higher education required.Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and cultural competence; experience working with underrepresented students and students from at-risk backgrounds.Experience and understanding of current issues and developments in higher education.Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills; must be able to communicate and interact effectively with Mount Mary students, employees, and alumnae.Exceptional ability to multitask and prioritize projects.Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group processes and foster collaborative decision making.Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite programs.
