Summary of Duties:

The Director is responsible for the vision and leadership of the Student Equity, Leadership, and Community unit, having substantial responsibility for directing program operations and is accountable for the allocation of resources and program results. The Director oversees management of selected partnerships and projects and develops and maintains community partnerships and projects that have campus and/or University-wide impact. Serves as the primary contact for community partners, students, and faculty. Regularly exercises independent judgement and discretion in policies related to student equity, student leadership, student fees, student organizations, community engagement, and service learning. Has delegated authority to make commitments that affect department operations. Work and information handled is of a nature requiring confidentiality and the exercise of discretion.

Essential Duties:

Leadership and Administration for Student Equity, Leadership, and Community - 50%

  • Lead an active student equity, leadership, and community engagement and service learning department by providing vision, organization, and administration.
  • Establish and maintain an organizational structure and staffing level to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for assessment of department programs and creating changes based on assessment.
  • Maintain and administer associated agreements for community engagement partnerships related to student community engagement.
  • Represent the unit at community and neighborhood meetings to develop and sustain community-campus partnerships that are mutually beneficial and that enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Serves as a principal contact for administrative concerns and unit activity.
  • Monitor and continuously evaluate departmental guidelines and policies related to equity, student involvement, student fees, community engagement, service learning, and risk management to ensure compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Represent the unit to institutional divisions, community partners, students, faculty, and staff and serve on relevant committees.
  • Develop and maintain current community partnerships to establish, maintain, and improve service-learning sites and opportunities for student equity, leadership, and involvement. May include projects such as the East Central-University Partnership.
  • Maintain the development of service-learning courses, following university procedures, and community engagement programs.
  • Ensure that the values of equity and inclusion are present in all student programming and development efforts to best support student engagement.
  • Study and analyze data and compose reports, forms, and other materials or presentations as needed.
  • Lead an advisory board consisting of students, faculty, staff, community partners, and administrators.
  • Provide problem solving, consultation, direction, and interpretation of policies related to equity and leadership to the community, students, faculty, and staff engaging in the unit or its programs.
  • Participate in fundraising, grant writing, and development activities.
  • Oversee the implementation and use of online database systems related to student equity, leadership, community engagement, and service learning.
  • Prepare and present oral and/or written reports and project presentations as they relate to the programs within the unit.

Fiscal Management - 20%

  • Oversee the budgeting and fiscal management process for the unit, including student fee funded budgets and externally funded budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university policies and regulations, while maintaining appropriate internal control safeguards.
  • Assist in the development and management of fiscal and operational strategies for the area.
  • Engage in continuous improvement by assessing projects, impacts, learning outcomes, and program effectiveness; make changes based on findings from assessment.

Strategic Planning - 15%

  • Develop strategies for optimizing resources and personnel.
  • Enhance collaboration of offices and program delivery to expand outreach and access to all students.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of strategic and long-range plans, goals, and objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the plan’s effectiveness and outcomes.
  • Recommend and implement changes for improvement.
  • Oversee implementation of the student climate survey and incorporate results into strategic planning efforts.

Supervision - 10%

  • Oversee the hiring, training, and supervision of full-time staff and student employees.
  • Engage professional staff in participation in professional development opportunities to keep the unit up-to-date on best practices.

Other - 5%

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.

Additional Requirements:

  • Four years of experience related to building and/or developing community coalitions, partnerships, and/or relationships in the public sector.
  • Experience maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
  • A valid driver’s license must be obtained by date of hire.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Able to travel, occasionally overnight, to other campus locations and to attend meetings, conferences, and other site locations.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
