Position Summary

University Relations and Development (URAD) shares the University’s mission and vision underscored in the 2020 five-year strategic plan. Units of URAD work together to create enduring relationships with alumni, parents, donors, students and the community, to generate private support for SDSU students, faculty and a diverse number of programs. URAD handles a range of services encompassing stewardship, events, gift administration, communications and more.

With the support of loyal donors and working alongside SDSU’s visionary faculty and staff leaders, SDSU builds lifelong relationships with over 430,000 alumni, friends and the community that advance the mission of SDSU.

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President of Planned Giving and Estates, the Director of Planned Giving will independently and in conjunction with development officers and unit colleagues work to identify, cultivate and solicit major, deferred and outright gifts prospects. The incumbent should have a clear understanding of the role that philanthropy can play in fulfilling an individual’s personal and financial objectives as well as the objectives of the University. Understand, develop and explain various gift options and philanthropic vehicles that will help achieve the donor’s charitable goal.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Education and Experience

• A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• Five years of direct not-for-profit fundraising experience or related experience in marketing, financial services or customer service.

Licenses and Certifications Required

• Valid California driver’s license within 10 days of hire

Specialized Skills

• Proven competency and comprehension of planned giving
• Proficient with planned giving vehicles and techniques
• Campaign experience
• Strong planning or organizational skills
• Self-motivated, high energy and have an appreciation and understand the role of philanthropy in higher education
• On-going professional development in planned giving
• Stay current on latest tax changes
• Learning and applying new trends and techniques

Preferred Qualifications

• A Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) or obtain one while in current role; OR Juris Doctorate will satisfy this requirement along with at least two years of planned giving experience
• Experience in higher education fundraising
• Proficiency with or ability to learn Crescendo, Advanced Planned Giving Module, Microsoft Office Suite; PG Calc experience is acceptable

CSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
