To achieve its vision, the Department of Biological Sciences has set as its mission several inter-related goals:
• To advance the frontiers of knowledge through innovation and research in the biological sciences;
• To facilitate the development of scientists in the guidance of our bachelor, master’s, and doctoral Biology students, and in the training of post-doctoral fellows.
• To increase scientific literacy, foster an appreciation of scientific inquiry, and develop well-informed citizens by providing general education in Biology to the student population;
• To participate in the University-wide academic community through interdisciplinary collaborations, programs, and curricula;
• To contribute to local, national, and international scientific communities through collaborations and service activities that promote education and dissemination of information;
• To contribute to the community by collaborating with public, nonprofit, private, and industry partners in the Charlotte metropolitan area and the State of North Carolina.

Description of Work:

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission, goals, and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Required qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in the biological sciences or related fields with expertise in immunology, host-pathogen interactions genome integrity, cancer biology, or responses to the environment and/or stress; a demonstrated proficiency in the discipline by a record of extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications, appropriate to rank; a commitment to teach and mentor a diverse student population at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and an ability to substantially expand current department collaborative teams and funded research programs and a passion for mentoring and leading early-career faculty to success.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

The successful candidate will be expected to sustain an established, independent, externally funded, internationally recognized research program that will enhance the biomedical research of the department in the interconnected areas of health, environment, and genomics. The successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in team science efforts in the department as well as enhance cooperation between the Biological Sciences, and other academic units, colleges, and programs at the university. The successful candidate will be expected to successfully contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate curricula, including courses in the areas of physiology, health, and the environment, and/or biotechnology.
