Job Description

This position is responsible for maintaining and supporting HPC technology in a research environment based on quickly changing research capacity and requirements. Incumbent must possess strong problem-solving skills, and ability and willingness to constantly update their skills and body of knowledge. Incumbent must possess strong communication skills to interact with a diverse clientele and to create rich, effective documentation and workshops/training.

Core Admin Work – 60%

  • Install, configure, test and update HPC hardware, software, and service systems in the NAU computing environment, coordinating with vendors as applicable.
  • Use sound judgment to analyze and resolve system problems, including functional, security, as well as performance issues.
  • Analyze scientific workloads and develop solutions for user/project problems; provide one-on-one jobscript/code debugging, optimization and porting help.
  • Monitor status and use of resources (systems, networks, disk, memory, as applicable), and suggest configurations and/or system enhancements to achieve optimal use of resources and/or performance.

Configure Custom Research Software – 20%

  • Configure, install, and maintain open-source software.

Cluster Support and Documentation - 10%

  • Develop and maintain intelligent scripts, and software to support systems, services, and users.
  • Maintain documentation on system capabilities, installed software and optimal use of the system and equipment for operations staff and end-users.

Training – 5%

  • Keep current on skills, knowledge and best practices for HPC system management by researching on-line, with periodicals or by means of attending lectures or conferences.
  • Assist in development and delivery of user training material.
  • Train other staff on support of new capabilities and services.

Other – 5%

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in computer science, or related field; AND,
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience; OR,
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a research university setting.
  • Experience with SLURM, or other scheduling/resource management software.
  • Experience with the use of accelerators, such as GPGPUs, in HPC environments.
  • Knowledgeable with many of the following HPC concepts/technologies: MPI, OpenMP, pthreads, and distributed memory vs shared memory.
  • Comfortable with shell scripting languages such as Bash
  • Comfortable with programming languages such as Python, and C/C++

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Intermediate knowledge of configuration, tools, processes, policies, and concepts of system administration.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Linux, and common systems administration tasks.
  • Intermediate understanding of TCP/IP networking concepts and associated services such as DNS, NTP, and DHCP.
  • Strong problem solving, organizational, and analytical capabilities.
  • Strong programming language understanding including coding fundamentals, and debugging.
  • Knowledge of computer system hardware fundamentals, maintenance methods and processes.
  • Communicates effectively through clear verbal and written communication.
  • Balances competing priorities between support tickets and projects.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

Salary range begins at $62,996. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
