Description The College of Charleston Department of Music invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Black American and/or Afro-diasporic Music, beginning August 16, 2022. We seek a dynamic educator who can draw on both scholarly and performance-based perspectives. The successful candidate will develop courses on Black American musics that fulfill the College’s Race, Equity, and Inclusion curriculum requirement, in addition to other teaching responsibilities within the Department of Music in accordance with their training (e.g. applied lessons, ensembles, music history or theory). Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in viola, gospel choir, jazz voice, or another area complementary to our departmental needs. Responsibilities Responsibilities of every faculty member include a commitment to teaching excellence, maintaining an outstanding program of research, performance, and/or creative activity, and providing service to the Department and College. For faculty members with an active research/performance/creative program, the ordinary teaching assignment is 3/3. Qualifications Terminal degree in music (Ph.D., D.M.A.) by August 16, 2022 or equivalent professional experience. Evidence of successful teaching at the college level. The Department of Music is committed to a diverse and inclusive educational environment and especially encourages applicants from underrepresented groups. The department offers a BA in Music with three concentrations (Performance, Theory and Composition, Music History and Culture) and a Masters of Arts in Teaching. Faculty are encouraged to develop special topics courses fueled by their interests and to mentor undergraduate independent studies and Bachelor’s Essays. Faculty are also encouraged to seek out interdisciplinary collaborations, such as creative and performance opportunities with the Department of Theatre and Dance or the Halsey Gallery of Contemporary Art, or research/teaching collaborations with the African-American Studies, Southern Studies, or Women’s and Gender Studies programs. The city of Charleston is a site of critical historical importance in understanding the culture and music of Africans and their descendants in the New World. It is part of the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor and home to important institutions dedicated to preserving and studying African-American culture, including the Avery Research Center and the International African-American Museum. Charleston is also home to a lively contemporary arts scene, including the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Jazz Orchestra, and numerous smaller groups and organizations. The College of Charleston is located in historic downtown Charleston in a coastal metropolitan area of 800,000. The College is a public, liberal arts and sciences institution with a student body of approximately 10,000 undergraduate students and 900 graduate students, 20% of whom identify as minority, and 140 international students from 34 different countries.
